2019 Dubai Racing Carnival – Saturday 9th March – Super Saturday

The tenth meeting of the 2019 Dubai World Cup Carnival – Super Saturday – takes place tomorrow, please find below the Week 10 Meydan Overview and bet selections written by Racing TV’s Angus McNae.

Also attached are the race cards for the tenth race meeting of the Carnival.

Meydan Overview & Selections – Week 10:

As Cheltenham looms on the horizon in the UK, we get a taste of top class International flat racing at Meydan this weekend where every race replicates those contests we can enjoy on World Cup night. Each race is not only a tremendous race in its own right but they all carry plenty of clues for the big night itself.

7:35am Meydan: MANGUZI

Manguzi won the trial for this race making all the running and he can book his place in the UAE Derby line up by winning again here. I am banking on him breaking sharply from his wide draw and finding the lead on the rail. He does possess plenty of speed as he showed in the trial where he was much better than the subsequent UAE 2000 Guineas winner Estihdaaf despite that one closing him down late on. Estihdaaf who has the benefit of a good rail in the Guineas re-opposes but is drawn outside Manguzi and the headgear that sparked him into life last time is not certain to work again. As with Dirt Racing the world over the start will be crucial. If Manguzi breaks well and can cross and clear he represents some value here.

8:45am Meydan: MUNTAZAH win. Reverse exacta MUNTAZAH and HEAVY METAL

I think this race will be dominated by Heavy Metal and Muntazah as they lay down markers for the Godolphin Mile. Heavy Metal has not been at his best in two runs here so far but his jockey Mikael Barzalona was too aggressive on him last time and he could fair better here given that he could be the sole speed on the rail and he is now back with his former trainer Salem Bin Ghadayer. Preference is for Muntazah though who beat him comfortably last time and was a very good second to Heavy Metal in the Godolphin Mile last year. Given that he seems to be improving rapidly now racing on dirt and Heavy Metal is seemingly not quite as good as he was I take Muntazah to prevail in a duel.

9:55am Meydan: NEW TRAILS (win and place), CAPEZZANO win

This is a tremendous race and sees the return of last year’s Dubai World Cup winner Thunder Snow who is likely to be a shade of odds on. That’s poor value given that he is unlikely to be given a hard time in a race that will be run at a brutal gallop. Connections will be anxious to avoid a bounce in the World Cup itself. Cosmo Charlie and Capezzano look sure to set a sound gallop and Cappezano is a fascinating runner. It’s entirely possible that he will get loose on the lead as he did in a Handicap last time and not come back to his rivals. His performance that day was sensational winning by 17 lengths off a mark of 101. He could win here, but if he fails to get home which is a possibility the Godolphin Mile would be a tremendous target for him. A small win bet on him is advised and New Trails must be backed each way. He was impressive over this distance two starts ago and was running North America down all the way to the line in Round 2 of this Challenge. I can see him making late gains off a serious gallop and he looks sure to be involved. He should be supported win and place for the Ahmed Bin Harmash team. Thunder Snow remains a big player for the Dubai World Cup itself if running well here without having a hard race. Fascinating stuff.

10:30am Meydan: DREAM CASTLE

Godolphin are mob-handed here and both Blair House and Wootton are big players. Particularly Wootton who was most eye catching in his seasonal reappearance when meeting trouble. I prefer the transformed Dream Castle though who has recaptured his best here in Dubai following a gelding operation and an association with Christophe Soumillon who knows how to make this horse tick. He is a strong traveller with a smart turn of foot who will he dropped out and ridden patiently before utilising his electric turn of foot. This is a stepping stone to the Dubai Turf.
