MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS AND FOOD BANK FUNDRAISERS FINISH FIRST IN THIS WEEKEND’S RACING AT SANDY DOWNS

The thoroughbreds and quarter horses running this weekend at IdaRacing at Sandy Downs share the spotlight with the fans as part of the meet’s Fund Raising festival.  Saturday’s is dedicated to the Idaho Falls Community Food Bank which provided donations to over 24,000 people last year.  On Sunday, IdaRacing will join in the fight against Multiple Sclerosis, the disease that causes crippling disabilities to those as young as their twenties.

Gates open at 3 p.m. on Saturday with post time for the first race at 4 p.m.  The Bud Light Happy Hour featuring half price beer and wine will be offered from 3 to 4 p.m.  There will be live music and the “Party at the Downs” showcased by a Sock Saddle Race.   The day will honor Larry Chapple, the king of East Idaho’s racing community for his lifetime achievement to the industry.  Larry’s four-year-old filly, Paris In April was named Horse of the Year at the recently concluded Les Bois Park meet after winning the Fillies Run for the Pink for the Cure race.  It was her fourth victory of the year with a second and a third place finish in seven starts.  The race itself was sponsored by Larry in honor of his wife who is battling cancer.

Fans bringing canned goods on Saturday will receive $1 off on admission to benefit the Community Food Bank of Idaho Falls.  The food bank is a vital service especially in the current economy.  With so many people traveling during the summer the shelves begin to deplete.  With the holiday season just around the corner, this is a great opportunity for local residents to pitch in.  IdaRacing at Sandy Downs general manager Jim Bernard said his organization will match each $1 from the fans up to $1000.00 for the food bank.

Every Sunday at Sandy Downs throughout the meet is Family Day and this week’s festivities will help support the Multiple Sclerosis Society.  MS is a chronic and disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system.  It increasingly affects those in their 20’s and 30’s resulting in years of struggle for its victims.  Fans will be encouraged to donate at least $1 from each of their winnings and once again, IdaRacing at Sandy Downs will match up to $1000.00 of the monies raised.

There will be a fun bounce and games for the kids.  The Bud Light Happy Hour will be offered when the gates open at 12 noon until the first race at 1 p.m.  Friends and supporters of the Bingham Memorial Hospital will celebrate the day at the races with their annual event.

Both days will also include the music, comedy and games of the Colt Whitmore Show.  Colt brings his popular program to Sandy Downs each weekend racing day which concludes on Sunday, Sept. 30.
