2019 Dubai Racing Carnival – Thursday 24th January

The fourth meeting of the 2019 Dubai World Cup Carnival takes place tomorrow, please find below the Week 4 Meydan Overview and bet selections written by Racing TV’s Angus McNae.

Meydan Overview & Selections – Week 4:

I think we have seen two horses so far at this year’s Dubai International Carnival who can be identified as future winners of specific races. The UAE 2000 Guineas looks to be at the mercy of the very impressive trial winner Walking Thunder. He is unbeaten in three starts on the dirt and looks to be an absolute natural on the surface. The Balanchine on the Turf should be taken by Poetic Charm who was far too good for her rivals in the Cape Verdi last week. She has a potent turn of foot and now that connections have worked out that she needs holding up and riding cold she should be very hard to beat in the Balanchine.

That is all to come. One winner last week with Ispolini and four more selections for you this week:

9:30am (ET) Meydan: Faatinah

There is a best fresh warning that comes with this horse, but such was his authority when winning here a couple of weeks ago I think he can go in again. In giving him just a 3lb rise the handicapper has been generous. As analysts we must not become too fond of pigeonholing horses and whilst he does go well fresh he certainly wasn’t disgraced in finishing second to Baccarat on his second start here last year. This is a gilt edged opportunity to back up his win and I believe he will.

10:05am (ET) Meydan: Superior

This race is something for the analysts. The type of horse I didn’t want to go with was a turf bred one or one drawn wide. Thus I have landed on this once raced winner. He won his only start and that was on the dirt here at Meydan. He does have to improve but from this yard there could be plenty more to come. He is drawn in stall 4 so should be able to adopt a handy position and given there is plenty of dead wood here and a good few who have no chance given their ability to handle the surface or draw then Superior is worth playing here

10:40am (ET) Meydan: Blair House

This is an excellent renewal of the Al Rashidiya and a number of these would rank as plausible winners of this race. I was tempted by the rejuvenated Dream Castle who after a gelding operation put up almost a career best to win a slowly run Singspiel Stakes a couple of weeks ago. However, I believe that Blair House is the class act in the field. He won the Jebel Hatta last year when he had a positional advantage over the top class Benbatl. That said he was able to push that horse close at Caulfield last October and quite simply that ranks as the best form in the race. He is well drawn in stall 1 and the Appleby team are rolling now. He must go well here.

12:25 (ET) Meydan: Bin Battuta

This horse could be competing at Graded Stakes level and off a mark of 106 he can back up his win here two weeks ago. That performance came in a race that was run at a crawl, but he showed an impressive turn of foot to beat Ispolini who has franked the form by winning last week. This does not look to be a particularly strong handicap and with Christophe Soumillon again on board he can give weight to and dominate inferior rivals.
