Exciting Opening Weekend Launches Keeneland Spring Meet 

Toyota Blue Grass and Central Bank Ashland anchor prestigious racing schedule;

LEXINGTON, KY (April 1, 2016) – Racing returns to Keeneland on Friday, April 8, with the start of the 2016 Spring Meet, headlined by the $1 million Toyota Blue Grass (G1) during an opening weekend that features six graded stakes races worth $2.25 million. The Toyota Blue Grass and $500,000 Central Bank Ashland (G1) key a Saturday, April 9 card that features top contenders for the Kentucky Derby (G1) Presented by Yum Brands! and Kentucky Oaks (G1), respectively.

 

In all, Keeneland’s 16-day Spring Meet features 16 stakes races worth $4.225 million. The Spring Meet, to be held April 8-29, will offer racing Wednesdays through Sundays. Gates open at 11 a.m. ET; post time for the first race is 1:05 p.m. ET except for Saturday, April 9 and Saturday, April 16, when first post is 12:35 p.m.

 

In addition to the Toyota Blue Grass and Central Bank Ashland, Keeneland will run three other Grade 1 races: the $300,000 Madison for fillies and mares going seven furlongs on Saturday, April 9; $300,000 Maker’s 46 Mile, one of the country’s premier turf races for older horses on Friday, April 15; and $350,000 Coolmore Jenny Wiley for fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles on Saturday, April 16.

 

The Toyota Blue Grass, for 3-year-olds at 1 1/8 miles, and the Central Bank Ashland, for 3-year-old fillies going 1 1/16 miles, are worth 100 points each to the winners on the Road to the Kentucky...

RACHEL’S VALENTINA JOINS PROBABLE CENTRAL BANK ASHLAND CAST

Stonestreet Stables’ Rachel’s Valentina, runner-up to champion Songbird in the 14 Hands Winery Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) here last fall in her most recent start, has been confirmed as a probable starter in next weekend’s 79th running of the $500,000 Central Bank Ashland (G1) for 3-year-old fillies.

Stakes Coordinator Tiffany Bourque said Friday morning that trainer Todd Pletcher had indicated the Central Bank Ashland was a go for Rachel’s Valentina, who is training at Palm Beach Downs in Florida.

Other probable starters for the Central Bank Ashland, which carries 170 points toward the
$1 million Kentucky Oaks (G1) on May 6 at Churchill Downs with 100 points to the winner, are Cathryn Sophia, Carina Mia and Weep No More.

Aqueduct Spring Meet Starts March 31

We thought our IdaBet.com players would want to know that the 2016 Aqueduct Spring Meet is set for Thursday, March 31 – Sunday, April 24. 1st post is set for 1:20pm for all days except Saturday, April 9th.

The 92nd running of G1 Wood Memorial is set for Saturday, April 9th. The Wood will be run as the 10th race of the 12-race card with post time set for 5:30pm, and will be shown live on the NBC Sports Network. New York’s final Triple Crown prep race will be accompanied on the card by the G1 Carter Handicap, the G2 Gazelle, the G3 Bay Shore and the G3 Excelsior.

OPENING WEEKEND STAKES FIELDS TAKING SHAPE

Prospective fields for Keeneland’s marquee Spring Meet events for 3-year-olds, the $1 million Toyota Blue Grass (G1) and the $500,000 Central Bank Ashland (G1), are beginning to come into focus a little more than a week out from the April 9 renewals on the second day of the 2016 season.

Racing Secretary Ben Huffman and Stakes Coordinator Tiffany Bourque have nine runners deemed as probable starters for the 92nd running of the Toyota Blue Grass at 1 1/8 miles on dirt.

The winner of the Toyota Blue Grass earns 100 qualifying points to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1). The next three finishers in the race will receive 40 points, 20 points and 10 points, respectively.

Heading that list is the Albaugh Family Stable’s Brody’s Cause. Winner of the Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity (G1) here last fall and a subsequent third in the Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1), Brody’s Cause is trained by Dale Romans. Four years ago, Romans completed a Breeders’ Futurity-Toyota Blue Grass double with Dullahan.

Other Toyota Blue Grass probables are American Dubai, Donegal Moon, Hint of Roses, Laoban, Pinson, Star Hill, Twizz and Vorticity.
