THREE-YEAR-OLDS PREP FOR SAN FELIPE STAKES

Danzing Candy and Uncle Lino, two contenders for the Grade II, $400,000 San Felipe Stakes for three-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles on March 12, worked on Santa Anita’s fast main track Saturday for the race, a major steppingstone to the $1 million Santa Anita Derby on April 9.

Danzing Candy went five furlongs in 1:00.20, while Uncle Lino went four furlongs in 47.80 with Fernando Perez up for trainer Gary Sherlock. Danzing Candy won an allowance race at one mile by nearly six lengths on Feb. 4.

“It was a perfect work,” said Cliff Sise Jr., trainer of Danzing Candy, a son of Twirling Candy. “He just galloped. Mike was very happy with him.”

STORMY LUCY HEADS FIELD OF 12 IN SATURDAY’S GRADE II, $200,000 BUENA VISTA STAKES

Stormy Lucy heads a field of 12 in this Saturday’s 30^th edition of the Grade II, $200,000 Buena Vista Stakes for older fillies and mares going a mile on the grass at Santa Anita.

Trained by Ed Moger, Jr., Stormy Lucy has become the turf mare to watch ever since her impressive Grade I Matriarch win at Del Mar in late November. Running late to overcome Recepta by a head, among 13 other rivals in the mile turf race, the 6-year-old mare notched her first Grade I win.

Since then, Stormy Lucy has run a close second in two subsequent appearances; the Grade III Robert J. Frankel Stakes at 1 1/8 miles by a neck and the Grade III Megahertz, by a nose, to Buena Vista competitor Keri Belle, both over Santa Anita’s turf course.

Jockey Kent Desormeaux, who has been aboard “Lucy” for her last three races and who will again be engaged to ride Saturday didn’t believe the Megahertz was an accurate gage of just how talented his mare is. “I had no intention of being as far back as I was,” said the Hall of Famer. “She got shuffled back and kind of stuck her feet in the ground. I wanted to be mid-pack.”

The recently turned 7-year-old mare owned by Steve Moger is by Stormy Atlantic, out of the Dixieland Band mare, Here Comes Lucinda and is 33-8-4-5 overall with $811,700 in earnings.

Keenly competitive on the track, both Doug O’Neill and Keith Desormeaux were uncommonly gracious and magnanimous after O’Neill’s unbeaten champion two-year-old colt of 2015 Nyquist defeated the Desormeaux-trained Exaggerator in Monday’s San Vicente Stakes.

Good sportsmanship aside, now each three-year-old is headed in a different direction on the Triple Crown trail.

“Goodness gracious,” Desormeaux said after Nyquist held off Exaggerator by a length and a half as the 2-5 favorite in the $200,000 San Vicente at seven furlongs. “Anybody not a believer in Nyquist now, that was an awesome race.

“To set those kinds of fractions and still finish in close to track record time for a three-year-old in February. Wow! Hats off to Nyquist.”
