Turfway Picks for Sunday, January 24th

To all our IdaBet.com players, we sincerely hope that the winter storms in your neck of the woods have simmered down a bit…

Listed below are Turfway’s Picks for Sunday, January 24th by Bret Battaglia.

Enjoy your Sunday and thanks for choosing IdaBet.com!

Race 1

BOOM DE YA DA comes in off a nice win against similar over the track here at Turfway and rates a slight edge against a wide-open field. RENN LAKE was second last time out and has the speed to be dangerous today. SIVA was beaten as the favorite last time out, but shows two in the money finishes over the rack in his last two starts.

Race 2

TRICE UP finished a close fourth last time out after pressing a quick pace. He figures to be on or near the lead again today and is the choice for the in against a well-matched field. FOLOWTHEMOEYTRAIL was fifth as the favorite last time out on the drop in class. He has seven wins here at Turfway and looks like the one to beat. CANDY CHANT looked very sharp beating a few of these same horses last time out at long odds. Any improvement off of that effort would make him tough to beat again today.

Race 3

DADDY’S PROFITT was a beaten favorite in Ohio last time out, but ran a decent race against tougher here at Turfway before that one and is the choice for the win here. CELEBRITY SONG drops in class after two disappointing efforts since coming back from the layoff. She broke her maiden here at Turfway last winter and could be dangerous today. PEW looks capable of running well here despite the move up in class.

Race 4

LET’S CALL A TRUCE looked sharp winning last time out in his second start over the track. He figures to be part of the pace again today, give him the edge in another will-matched filed. JOE’S KEEPER has a win and a third in his last two starts here at Turfway and is a definite contender. THE GREEN COUGAR closed well to finish second last time out and figures to be running at...

SANTA MONICA FIELD GROWS WITHOUT BIG FAVORITE

Saturday’s Grade II Santa Monica Stakes drew nine entrants, thanks in no small part to the unexpected absence of Sunday Rules, who would have ruled as the odds-on favorite in the seven furlong test for older fillies and mares.

One horse entered that had been on fence is Kyriaki, a 6-year-old Scat Daddy mare coming off a head victory in the mud at Delta Downs

“That’s why there’s such a big field,” said Peter Eurton, trainer of Kyriaki. “We fooled around with Kyriaki on the turf for 12 starts, but she’s been on dirt and won three and she’s gotten better with age.

“I’m not 100 percent sure sprinting is her best gig. I think she wants a mile, but seven-eighths is not so bad.”

Also set for the Santa Monica is Ben’s Duchess, fourth in the Grade I La Brea at seven furlongs on Dec. 26.

“She had her prep Monday morning at 6:30 with Joe Talamo up,” trainer John Sadler said....
