He looks wound up to perform fresh and if his record is anything to go by then he is expected to put in a big effort. #8 Sunny Delight is so, so close to a first win. Still, he pairs favourably with Joao Moreira here which should give him every opportunity from the inside gate. #3 King Tourbillon can reverse his form after finishing down the track last start. The good gate enhances his claims and he’s an each way chance. #1 Jade Phoenix has the class and deserves respect.  Race 2: Causeway Bay Handicap  Ricky Yiu is in flying form and #8 Prime Minister can continue his handler’s hot run here. He’s raced well fresh in the past and his latest trial effort was nothing short of impressive. One to beat. #4 Fa Fa loves Happy Valley and has shown he is much better suited to racing at the city circuit. The break will have done him a world of good as his form tailed off last season. #5 Sunny Star will come from well back but does have the class to finish over the...

Race 1: Bedford Handicap (2nd Section)

8 Miracles caught the eye in a recent trial and he looks very well placed to make an impact first-up for the new season. The dirt clearly suits him and he’s favoured with the light weight. #1 California Vanes is a winner on the turf. There are queries around him racing on the dirt, especially under the heavy weight, however, his pairing with Zac Purton mustn’t go unnoticed. #5 Luck Star trialled well on the dirt recently. He’s shown a bit of quality and it wouldn’t shock to see him figure. #7 Colourful Prince is next best.

Race 2: Cheong Wan Handicap (1st section)

3 Apex Top makes a favourable return to Class 5 this weekend. His last run in this grade nearly returned a win and his latest trial suggests that he is in tip-top condition for trainer Tony Millard who, already has one win this term. #1 Brave Power has a powerful finish on his day. Class 5 is the right grade for him and he’ll be suited by a fast tempo, if they happen to give it to him. #14 Zacian is at least consistent, even though he is still without a...

Saulsbrook Olympia back on track in Batavia feature

Saulsbrook Olympia back on track in Batavia feature

Sep 8, 2022

Beaten only a nose last week after winning three in a row, Saulsbrook Olympia got back to her winning ways after she parlayed a lot of early movement into a late stretch score in the $15,000 Open I Handicap pace for fillies and mares at Batavia downs on Wednesday night (Sept. 7).

Dontustopbelievn N (Jim Morrill Jr.) grabbed the front and made fellow leavers Demeter N (Larry Stalbaum) and Dashintothebeach N (Luke Hanners) work hard to take it from her. Demeter N cleared at the :28 quarter and Dashintothebeach N supplanted that one at the top of the stretch, heading to the half. And just as the field had finally achieved single file, Tres Chic Bluechip (Kevin Cummings) pulled first-over from fifth and brought Saulsbrook Olympia (Dave McNeight III) with her to push the issue even further.

Dashintothebeach N continued to lead up the backstretch until she hit three-quarters where Tres Chic Bluechip drew alongside, but that was just part of the evolving story. Saulsbrook Olympia who had been drafting one out and two back in the breeze was now winging it three-wide halfway into the final turn. By the time they hit the straight, Tres Chic Bluechip had overtaken Dashintothebeach N, but then Saulsbrook Olympia overtook Tres Chic Bluechip and pulled away to 1-½ length victory in 1:53.4.

It was the fourth win in the last five starts and eighth win overall this year for Saulsbrook Olympia ($9.40) who is owned by William Mcneil and Edward Gorc and trained by Jeniffer Giuliani.

McNeight III had a driving double on Wednesday.

There were also two $11,000 upper-level condition races for distaff participants and the winning pair went nearly identical miles.

In the first So Admirable (Jim Morrill Jr.) started from post one and was never headed. After cutting quarters of :28.1, :57.1 and 1:25.3 while extending her lead to three lengths by the top of the stretch, she closed out the deal in 1:54.2, equalling her...

Race 1: Mount Parker Handicap

3 Winning Steed trialled very nicely for trainer Dennis Yip and jockey Silvestre de Sousa. Silvestre can kick off his Hong Kong stint with a win here as the Hinchinbrook gelding looks wound up and ready to fire fresh. #14 This Is Charisma isn’t a winner yet, but his consistency deserves consideration here. Expect a competitive first-up effort with Zac Purton engaged. #2 Star Of Glory should find the front. He’s aided by a crucial 10lb claim which sees him get in very, very well at the weights. #1 Regency Master draws well and has claims. Strong booking of Karis Teetan holds him in good stead.

Race 2: Kowloon Peak Handicap

4 Strive For Glory caught the eye with an impressive first-past-the-post trial recently. He’ll need to offset the wide draw but looks very, very well placed to perform here. Not much between the top two and #7 The Good Deal, who also appears worthy of a ticket. He turned his form around at the end of last season in this grade and Karis Teetan’s booking commands respect. #9 The Jolly mixes his form but has improved in Class 5. Lyle Hewitson...
