Kenrick N puts in career effort at Plainridge Park

Kenrick N puts in career effort at Plainridge Park

May 29, 2018

An assigned outside post and three inside leavers did not dissuade Kenrick N from his preferred style of racing and at the end of the mile, the local wonder from down under notched another big win in the $14,000 Winners-Over feature pace at Plainridge Park on Memorial Day Monday (May 28) in front of a large trackside crowd.

Leaving from post seven, driver Ron Cushing floated Kenrick N off the gate and waited for Sailor Jerry (Nick Graffam), Quick Shot (Drew Campbell) and Pretty Boy Hill (Greg Merton) to find the pylons before he urged his horse to the front just before they hit the half in :53.4. From there the race was basically over.

Moving up the backstretch, there were three horses out and three horses in behind the leader but none were making any headway. Cushing popped the plugs right at the three-quarter pole and Kenrick N responded big time. Under mild urging Kenrick N opened up a quick three-length advantage as they approached the top of the stretch where Cushing looked over his shoulder and saw the gap he had opened. Then he simply put his hands in his lap and let Kenrick N cruise to the wire at his own pace a wrapped-up, four-length winner in 1:50, which was a new lifetime mark.

Now sporting two wins, a second and a third in five North American starts since arriving in April, Kenrick N ($4.40) is well on his way to a career year for owners Kevin Sywyk and Ron Cushing and his trainer Heidi Gibbs.

In the secondary feature $12,000 condition pace, Mysharona Bluechip (Greg Merton) played...

HALF BROTHER TO JUSTIFY WINS THE ALL AMERICAN AT GOLDEN GATE

HALF BROTHER TO JUSTIFY WINS THE ALL AMERICAN AT GOLDEN GATE

May 29, 2018

Under the guidance of Southern California jockey Tyler Connor, 5-year-old The Lieutenant stalked the pace before surging in the final sixteenth of a mile to win the Grade 3 $100,000 All American Stakes for three-year-olds and upward at Golden Gate Fields.

“The pace definitely helped me,” said Connor. “Once I got him clear, he rolled home. He kicked on really well.”

My Friend Emma, who set the pace and carved out fast fractions of 23.07, 46.36, 1:10.78 and 1:23.43, hung on for second after doing the dirty work up front while Grecian Fire finished third after making a move from the back of the field. Perfectly Majestic rounded out the superfecta after encountering some traffic trouble in upper stretch.

The dam of The Lieutenant, Stage Magic, is also the dam of Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Justify, who looks to win the Triple Crown in two weeks time at Belmont Park. By Street Sense, The Lieutenant has now earned $209,537, with 4 victories from 12 lifetime starts. This is his first stakes triumph for owners Mr. and Mrs. William K. Warren Jr. and trainer Michael McCarrthy, who picked up his second stakes win of the meet. In February, McCarthy saddled Paved to win in the Grade 3 El Camino Real Derby.

Yonkers Peek At Program- Saturday May 26th

Some insights into tonight’s stakes program (reminder, after this evening, we’re AWOL until Friday night, June 8. Do not panic…counselors are standing by)

3RD RACE – (1) MACON GEORGIA A has not resembled his previous self of late. Did last versus lesser three back from pole and may find way versus these.

4TH RACE – (6) SUMATRA has been ingloriously inconsistent of late, and being adult-table road kill last week didn’t help. Disposed of this level in previous.

5TH RACE – (6) ALEXA’S POWER finally rids herself of pair of eight-hole efforts in nine-horse fields. Solid close in lone elim, wins Lismore with half a trip.

6TH RACE – (4) TRUMP NATION is timidly gazed to win 28th Art Rooney Pace. New co-owner (and new trainer) did not influence, but late elim moxie did.

7TH RACE – (4) LONG LIVE ROCK could not match strides with freakish runaway in last. Wins 4-thru-6 draw here, which ought to allow for some options.

9TH RACE – (5) SMALLTOWNTHROWDOWN gets a very generous venue after Sunday’s...
