JOCKEY QUOTES

KENT DESORMEAUX, WHAT A VIEW, WINNER: “Well from the ‘View’ I had everyone was going for the lead and this guy loves that; the faster, the better. I thought that if they all wanted to come at him, then he’d run them into the ground and I wanted to try and win the race that way.

“He was loaded turning for home. He was enjoying himself and I think he enjoyed the soft ground. The time is incredible because the turf has a tremendous amount of give in the ground. For him to put that number up on the clock, he’s a real racehorse.

“I feel like I’m making the right decisions right now and I hope that continues.”

MIKE SMITH, BOLO, SECOND: “I think anybody that was going to lay close (to What a View) was just going to shoot themselves in the foot. To be honest, I think that helped us run second. If I had tried to lay close, I wouldn’t have run second.”

FLAVIEN PRAT, BAL A BALI, THIRD: “My horse ran good, the horse ran his race and did well. I feel that I got a good race, [Bal a Bali] had his shot and ran his race well. I don’t need to make an excuse for him, he did well.”

TRAINER QUOTES

KENNY BLACK, TRAINER, WHAT A VIEW, WINNER: “We’ve had some issues with his feet and I just wanted to keep him on the grass. There were some really tough horses in here: Bolo, Bal a Bali and Om, so we knew we were going to have to run big to win.”

JUDY JOHNSTON, PART OWNER/BREEDER, WHAT A VIEW: “It feels...

JOCKEY QUOTES

JOE TALAMO, MELATONIN, WINER: “What a tremendous effort. I think I need some Melatonin right now to calm down from it. Dave and everyone involved are so high on this horse and his confidence coming out of that last race has really only gotten better, working-wise. We had a great trip, he broke real sharp and I just put him up there and fortunately he was going so easily. When I got to the first turn, they backed off him a bit so I was able to give him a breather and he opened up turning for home. I was pretty excited.

“You don’t really know until you try the distance and I didn’t think it was going to be a problem. Last time he made the lead pretty early and he kind of started to wait on horses and that’s when I knew I still had horse left. He’s a fun horse to ride, I’m just so grateful for the opportunity.

“His race last time was just so impressive to me. He was sprinting, he was running on turf but he just impressed me the way he did it. He won by over three and it was even easier than it looked so we’d thought we’d take a shot today.

“It means so much to win this race. I told Elizabeth when I left for the track today that I thought we had a big chance. I didn’t think we’d win like that but it was pretty exciting.

“This is huge. I had goose bumps when I crossed the wire. Ever since coming to California, aside from winning the Santa Anita Derby, this was a huge, huge goal of mine. This is one of the biggest races in California and to do it at Santa Anita in front of a crowd like this, is just icing on the cake.

“I felt Mario clip heels with me but I was more...

From the “Ayers Above” Saturday, March 12th

Race 1: 1- Ola Hanover – Draws the inside advantage and that advantage could be key to taking tonight’s opener. 6- Lock Up The Last – Another with a big shot to do well in here. 5- Gypsy Lady – One of several in here that could make the ticket. 2- BB Rockette – Could be in the thick of the action.

Race 2: 9- Steppin Hanover – Was a winner last time out and could strike again tonight. 8- Romantic Fever – Could do well in here despite starting from the far outside. 1- Janinne – Looks to be tough from the rail. 3- Pepstepn’ Penelope – Could garner a minor share in here.

Race 3: 4- Missy Tap Tina – Draws into a soft division and could be successful against tonight’s foes. 3- Sunrise Sunset – Another with a big shot in here. 1- Twinky – Could be tough from the rail.

Race 4: 3- Eloquent Velocity – Drops in class and could be victorious at this level of competition. 4- Delightful Syd – Another class dropper that looks to be tough in here. 9- Puddle Jumper – Could add value from the second tier. 2- Black Lace – Has as good of a shot as any in here to complete the Superfecta.

Race 5: 7- Hillary’s Style – Drops in class and could win in here despite the poor post draw. 5- Bikinis On Top – Made the ticket in both of her last two races and looks to be right...

HAVANNA BELLE SEEKS DISTANCE REPEAT IN SAN LUIS REY

Havanna Belle takes on male rivals in Sunday’s Grade II San Luis Rey Stakes at a mile and a half on turf. Jockey Brice Blanc, who rode the Irish-bred filly to a 10-1 upset win by 2 ¼ lengths in the restricted Astra Stakes at the same distance on a “good” turf course Jan. 17, feels she’s up to the task.

“She ran awesome,” Blanc said of the bay filly trained by Phil D’Amato for owner Michael House. “The distance seemed to be a plus for her.

“I worked her last week, she worked great, so I’m looking for a similar effort. We just need the right trip. She’s doing good and I expect her to run as well as she did in the Astra.”

The lineup: Southern Freedom, Martin Garcia, 12-1; Quick Casablanca, Tyler Baze, 6-1; Power Foot, Gary Stevens, 8-1; Going Somewhere, Mike Smith, 5-1; Life’s Journey, Jose Verenzuela, 50-1; Energia Fribby, Drayden Van Dyke, 15-1; Havanna Belle, Brice Blanc, 6-1; Highball, Flavien Prat, 12-1; Generosidade, Tiago Pereira, 30-1; Gaga A, Mario Gutierrez, 4-1; Big John B, Rafael Bejarano,...

Donworth

  • DONWORTH COULD BE THE ONE TO CATCH IN BIG ’CAP
  • IT’S SMITH’S CALL ON DANZING CANDY IN SAN FELIPE
  • BEST IS YET TO COME FOR BOLO IN GRADE I KILROE
  • COASTLINE RETURNS TO DIRT IN GRADE II SAN CARLOS
  • DRYSDALE ENTERS FOUR IN SUNDAY’S SAN LUIS REY

BIG ’CAP LEAD COULD BELONG TO DONWORTH

On paper, there appears to be no clear cut pacesetter in Saturday’s $1 million Santa Anita Handicap presented by San Manuel Indian Bingo & Casino.

But Doug O’Neill says if the lead is there for the taking, Donworth and his jockey, Mario Gutierrez, will be glad to accommodate his rivals.

“The great thing with him breaking from the three hole is at a mile and a quarter you’ve got plenty of run to the first turn,” O’Neill said of owner Paul and Zillah Reddam’s recent acquisition, who was third, beaten only a half-length, in the Feb. 6 San Antonio Stakes, Donworth’s first race in more than seven months.

“Hopefully he breaks well. Mario will put him in a good spot. If he’s the only one who wants the lead, so be it. Another horse would have to go out of his established running style to challenge us on the lead, the way it looks on paper.”

Richard Baltas, meanwhile, doesn’t expect Imperative to be too far back.

““We think we got an OK draw (eight) and...
