We are pleased to share selections by Sulky Sam for today’s racing at the Delaware County Fair!
Race 1
#1 Mighty Breeze—gets a huge pilot upgrade here with Wrenn Jr. The chestnut 2 y/o Straight Shooting colt has only 4 races under his belt in his freshman campaign, and the most recent, parked twice at Northfield should serve him well with these.
#5 Gerardo—seems to have a bad case of seconditis. He carries the same name as my friend Don Tiger’s favorite waiter at the famed Harold’s deli in Lyndhurst NJ, by the Meadowlands. The top selection’s pilot, his uncle Pete, will handle him as usual.
The other 5 contenders in this opening septet of freshman colts could land in any order.
Race 2
#5 Stormin At Dawn—is the one tabbed here in the second half of the early double. He gets a huge positive pilot switch as well. If we’re correct, it means Wrenn Jr. will commence the day winning both ends of it.
#4 Dontteasehim—gets just as much of a positive handling switch to Miller as our top selection. The track handicapper has made him the 5/2 m/l favorite in this octet of freshmen diagonal gaiters.
#6 Cheer The Storm—completes the selections here. He seems to have a penchant for running 2nd or 3rd. The pilot switch to the driver listed above’s nephew, Brett Miller, could move him up enough to topple one or both those we rated above him
Race 3
#4 Pinecraft Nellie—gives Wrenn Jr. the opportunity to start the day with a driving triple. There are only 4 going in here for a purse of $37.6k. The balance is unremarkable.
Race 4
#4 Hustling Charley—is a selection that finds us cheering for a 4 bagger to open the day for Wrenn Jr. An old friend once told me when looking at a bad bunch such as this, to go with the younger animal. Charley is only 4 y/o, and banked in excess of $100k in his 3 y/o campaign. Looks a ton the best of these, so for exotics, you’re on your own among the 6 other contenders. The #6, Dedi’s Dragon, whom opens at 7/2 m/l, hasn’t had a start since way back in May. This starts your early pick 4 wager.
Race 5
#3 Rising MVP—shows us 2 for 2 victories when being handled by today’s pilot Page. The freshman trotter opens as the 2/1 m/l fave, and deservedly so. It’s nice to begin a pick 4 with 2 singles. Conditioner Daugherty, an 18% winner, uses the trotting hobbles, so the miscue in his most recent at Wooster will be forgiven.
#8 CC Bank—shows us enough ability to leave for trainer-driver Noble that we will use him underneath for exotic purposes.
Race 6
#5 PQ Three—has us looking for back-to-back wins by the talented young pilot Page. Looks like another single in this 3rd leg of the pick 4. Has earned the most money in 2017 in this sorry group of 7.
#1 Giddy Up Binks—gets a huge driver upgrade with Brett Miller taking the lines for controversial conditioner Shepard. You are on your own for anything deeper for exotic wagering.
Race 7
#1 Golden Gottawyn—is the one we are looking at to sweep the pick 4 with all singles. The 4 y/o diagonal gaited mare by Victory Sam looks to give Page 3 straight winners. Her start on 09/01 wasn’t much more than a tour of the oval on South High St. after being on the shelf since July.
#2 Moon In My Shine—will tote wily veteran Don Harmon around in this cheap group, and Sam says One-Two, buckle my shoe exacta time.
Race 8
#4 Led Schneppelin—will be the one here in an octet of female driver participants. Diane Hartsock sports a fantastic UDR of .639 in just 4 starts. She won 2 of 3 with this 6 y/o altered son of Memphis Flash last month with wins at Troy and Greenville, after a runner-up finish at Urbana.
#1 Pow Chicka Pow Pow and #8 Virgil—are tepid selections to round out your exotic opportunities.
Race 9
#4 Home Run Trot—has young provisional driver Trevor Smith between the shafts in this nonet of 2 y/o colt and gelding trotters. In the 5 starts we see in the 10 line past performance program, the young lad has 2 wins, a 2nd, and (2) 3rd placings. We don’t really care much for the trackman’s 3/1 m/l fave, as he is 0 for 9 and has shown no small oval abilities.
#5 Whitman Spur—has us in a youth movement here in race 9, which signals that our racing day is half completed. Young McCown handles for 24% winning conditioner Beaver.
Race 10
#3 Whosur Linda—finds us going back to Wrenn Jr. asking for win number 5 of the afternoon. The driver upgrade, plus the fact that Sam was seated with Linda from PA for much of the twilight card yesterday are the only things that can justify overlooking the dismal performance in her most recent at Scioto on 09/07.
#2 Realistic and #5 Cyclone Alvie—are the obvious choices underneath and may even contend for the win should our top selection be no good.
Race 11
#5 Mission Accepted—won the $250k OSS final for freshmen colts and geldings at Scioto on 09/02. Ryan (golden hands) Stahl will handle the reins for notable trot conditioner Jeff (King) Conger. Getting the 2/1 m/l assignment at post time will prove impossible.
#1 Joggingtothebank—was a credible 5th, which got him a check, in the race mentioned above, considering he drew post 7, and was 8th by 13 at the 1st quarter call. Noble will pilot as usual for trotting specialist trainer Wollam.
#2 In My Dreams—was a sick scratch in the big money OSS final discussed above. Sandy Beatty knows him well, as his trainer-driver in all 5 LT starts for owners Brent Davis and “Trader” Bud Hatfield.
Race 12
#5 Won For Gigi—looks to be deserving of her 5/2 m/l fave assignment by the trackman. Her earnings in excess of $44k in 2017 far exceed those of her 6 rivals here. Provisional pilot Pierce Henry has handled her in 8 of her 10 listed starts in the past performances program.
#1 Not So Sweet and #2 The Gobye Girl—are logical choices to compete for the minor spoils in this group of 3 y/o distaff pacers.
