Buffalo Raceway Cancels Opening Weekend Cards

The only winner this weekend at Buffalo Raceway will be Mother Nature as a forecast of heavy rain on Friday (Jan. 12) followed by a projection of a foot of snow on Saturday (Jan. 13) have forced officials at the Hamburg half-mile oval to cancel the opening weekend of live harness racing action.
There were nine races scheduled for Friday evening and 10 more for Saturday but those will be wiped out due to the impending weather and potential dangerous track conditions. The 2018 opener is now slated for Wednesday, January 17 at 5 p.m.

Turfway Park Picks For Thursday, January 11th

Battaglia’s Picks For Turfway Park- Thursday, January 11th

RACE 1
L’IL J faded after setting a fast pace last out. He figures to make an easier lead tonight and is capable of the wire to wire score with Lebron picking up the mount. MANO FOX has been facing better in Florida and drops to the bottom for his Turfway debut. If he takes to the poly he will be tough to beat. BROTHERS DRYDEN has been in the money in nine of his last ten and has to be respected.

RACE 2
PERFECT EXECUTION was third in his Turfway debut against a much tougher field last out. He has the speed to be in good position throughout and rates the edge for Kim Hammond with Franklin aboard. THE GORILLA MAN has shown big improvement in his last two for Mike Maker. He will be running at the end and is definitely the one to beat. MAN OF BLUES is a solid contender in a very good starter allowance race.

RACE 3
MOUNT CALVARY comes off of a solid runner up effort at this level. He cuts back to 6 ½ furlongs tonight and his best would make him tough to beat in here. HARLAN’S DYNAMO has been off since a winning effort at Churchill two months ago.  He has been training well since that one and looks dangerous in this spot. PROMISES TO KEEP looked good winning last out and is a definite threat in a wide open race.

RACE 4
ENLISTED MAN likes this track and should get a good trip from the outside post. He will be rallying from just off of the pace and he gets the nod in this bottom claimer. ROD MCLEOD has the speed to be in good position throughout and should run well in his second try over the Turfway poly. REEDER drops in class and definitely fits with these.

RACE 5
HEAT ROAD faded after opening up a big lead last out going a flat mile. He will appreciate the cut back in distance and appears to be in a good spot to get the...

2018 Dubai Racing Carnival – Thursday 11th January

With the first race of the 2018 Dubai World Cup Carnival taking place tomorrow, please find below the Week 1 Meydan Overview and selections written by Racing UK’s Angus McNae

Meydan Overview – Week 1:

It’s the highlight of the racing calendar; where top class dirt racing meets top class turf racing in the magnificent setting of Meydan. Yes, it’s Dubai International Carnival time and I have four selections lined up for you. Round 1 of the Al Maktoum Challenge on dirt is the feature event on a superb card that also features the Singspiel Stakes on turf. The royal blue of Godolphin is well represented in the latter race and that looks set to be a theme in these early weeks of the Carnival, as does the very strong local challenge particularly when it comes to racing on the dirt.

10:05am (ET) Meydan: Ertijaal

Ertijaal has a tremendous course record here and this trip of five furlongs is his optimum. Indeed he is the course record holder. He has won this race for the past two years and despite having to give 11lb and upwards to his rivals he will surely prove too speedy for them all. When he won this race last year he was also giving weight away and was a cosy winner. I expect him to jump and run and add to his already impressive course performances.

11:15am (ET) Meydan: Benbatl

Godolphin should win this race, it’s just a question of with which horse. They have four representatives and I believe Benbatl to be the strongest. He has not had the right trip and ground combination since winning the 10-furlong Hampton Court Stakes at Royal Ascot. That day, on fast ground, he posted a very good speed...

Firenze Fire headlines New York’s ‘Road to the Kentucky Derby’ field in Saturday’s Jerome

Mr. Amore Stable’s Firenze Fire waited an additional two weeks but will have a chance to commence his 3-year-old campaign as part of a field of eight in the 148th running of the $150,000 Jerome on Saturday at Aqueduct Racetrack.

Contested at one mile, the Jerome marks the year’s first official prep race on the NYRA calendar that is part of New York’s “Road to the Kentucky Derby,” where 10 points will be awarded to the winner, four given to the runner-up, two to the third-place finisher and one point given to fourth place for qualifying for the “Run for the Roses” on May 5 at Churchill Downs. It was originally scheduled for New Year’s Day before inclement weather canceled the card.

Firenze Fire, a two-time graded stakes winner, won his first two career starts, including a one-length victory over Free Drop Billy in the Grade 3 Sanford on July 22 at Saratoga Race Course.

After running fourth in the Grade 1 Hopeful at the Spa, the Poseidon Warrior colt earned a personal-best 90 Beyer Speed Figure in rallying from 10th to capture the Grade 1 Champagne by a half-length over Good Magic on October 7 at Belmont Park.

Good Magic went on to the win the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on November 4 at Del Mar, with Firenze Fire settling for seventh. After a nearly two-month break, the Jason Servis trainee will make his Aqueduct debut.

Firenze Fire has been training at Belmont Park, where he breezed four furlongs in 50.99 seconds on the training track January 8. Temperatures are expected to climb into the high 40s on Saturday according to the National Weather Service.

“We still entered but the training hasn’t been ideal,” Servis said. “He’s been doing OK. The weather on Saturday shouldn’t really have an impact on...
