Yonkers Peek At Program- Tuesday, January 9th

A PEEK AT THE PROGRAM–TUESDAY, JANUARY 9

Some insights into tonight’s racing program for our IdaBet players:

1ST RACE – (5) BEGINNER’S LUCK finds way back here after a Catskills blowout. Last few locally not prominent, but made just nine ’17 starts, so tighter?

3RD RACE – (2) ACEFORTYFOURAMANDA ended last season as rock-solid bottom-level number. Gets shoved in for this price once again, thus nodded.

4TH RACE – (5) I’M THE REAL MAJOR returns for visit going third off barn change. Has been gazed upon more than once at this level, should work here.

7TH RACE – (5) A CRAFTY LADY gets what should be much-appreciated class dip. That said, she’s far from consistent versus these, but this group not scary.

9TH RACE – (7) BORDER CONTROL A is taken to be as talented as any in here, but continues string of rotten draws. Intrigues provided can find a way into it.

10TH RACE – (3) I LIKE DREAMIN’ is another who’s been four-eyeballed more than once, though we always thought there was more to his game. Shall see.

——

$2 +/- (thru Tue., Dec. 5) – 1 win ($15.60)

from 6 ($12) selex (+$3.60, revel in this profit margin while you can)

highest/lowest-priced winner – CONSOLIDATOR ($15.60)

Yonkers Begins 2018 Season As Consolidator Wins Sunday 50G Open Handicap Trot

Yonkers Raceway took the bow off its 2018 season Sunday (Jan. 7th), with lone lass Consolidator (catch-driver Jim Marohn Jr., $16.60) winning a chilly $50,000 Open Handicap Trot.

Originally drawn with nine entrants, the field was pared to seven after the eight-hole (Melady’s Monet, sick) and nine-hole (Tight Lines, weather) assignees were scratched.

Consolidator, from post position No. 4, worked out a third-over trip.  She set it up after Mostinterestingman  (Brent Holland) stuffed Money Maven (Yannick Gingras) into the pocket before eventually yielding to  9-10 choice Cash Me Out (Eric Goodell).

All this took place through early intervals of :29.4, 1:00 and 1:30.2. Money Maven then made his second move, going right at Cash Me Out at the 1:59.3 milepost.

A second-up Luminosity (George Brennan) wasn’t the  problem, but Consolidator was. She closed fastest, picking off Money Maven by a head while getting the mile-and-a-quarter in 2:29. Cash Me Out faded to third, with Home’n Dry (Matt Kakaley) and Luminosity settling for the remainder.

A casualty of the demise of the passing lane was Mostinterestingman, pocketed behind a tiring leader and ending up sixth (sidebar story a bit later).

For fourth choice Consolidator, a now-5-year-old daughter of Triumphant Caviar co-owned (as Allard Racing) by (trainer) Rene Allard, Bruce Soulsby, Laura Baker and Alan Weisenberg, the winning ’18 debut pushed her career earnings over $488,000. The exacta paid $79.50, with triple returned $256.50.

Absatootly, Quezon Face Off Again In Friday’s La Verdad

Newman Racing’s Absatootly and Mac Keller’s Quezon will square off for a fifth consecutive race as part of a field of seven older New York-bred fillies and mares in the first running of the $100,000 La Verdad at seven furlongs on Friday at Aqueduct Racetrack.

Originally scheduled to run on Saturday, January 6, the La Verdad’s inaugural edition was pushed back after a winter storm and inclement weather canceled racing at the Big A from January 4-7.

The rescheduled date provided an extra week of rest for Absatootly, who is looking to build on a third-place finish in the Garland of Roses on December 9 at Aqueduct, which Quezon won by three-quarters of a length. That marked the fifth time in seven stakes starts that Absatootly finished on the board last year, including a half-length score over Quezon in the Iroquois on October 21 at Belmont Park.

Trained by Charlie Baker, Absatootly finished 2017 with Beyer Speed Figures of 80 or better in her last four starts. Jockey Rafael Hernandez will have the call for the first time from post 2.

“I didn’t think the race would go off last week, but she’s been doing fine and we’re ready to see what she can do this year,” Baker said.

Quezon rallied from last in the Garland of Roses to register her only stakes win of 2017 in five attempts, including a third-place effort in the Grade 3 Vagrancy on May 5 at Belmont.

The 6-year-old Tiz Wonderful mare earned a personal-best 97 Beyer for running second in the Iroquois, which came one start after running third in the Grade 2 Gallant Bloom on September 24.

Quezon is 6-6-2 in 17 career starts. The Bobby Ribaudo trainee drew post 6 with Joe Rocco, Jr. aboard.

The ultra-consistent Bee Noteworthy will look to finish on the board for the fourth time in her...
