Mor Spirit, who was eased in a workout on Tuesday, remains a candidate for the San Felipe Stakes on March 12 pending his next workout, Bob Baffert said Thursday morning.

“I think I’m going to breeze him now on Sunday, and I’ll know more,” the trainer said of the Robert B. Lewis Stakes winner, his leading Triple Crown contender.

“We over-thought it a little bit,” Baffert said, speaking of the aborted drill. “Sometimes I work him with earplugs and sometimes I don’t. I don’t want him to do that much. He has them on when he leaves the paddock, then we take them out before he goes to the gate. It keeps him calm.

“He just lost interest (Tuesday); he’ll do that, but he’s all right.”

The San Felipe is a Grade II race at 1 1/16 miles with a $400,000...

Five-year-old gelding Alert Bay heads a field of 11 in Saturday’s $100,000 Sensational Star Stakes for California-bred or sired older horses going 6 ½ furlongs down Santa Anita’s hillside turf course.

Easily the most successful in the Sensational Star by earnings alone with over a $1,000,000 to his credit, Alert Bay, trained by Blaine Wright will be seeking his first win down the hill. Dominant over Santa Anita’s turf course in recent years, Alert Bay has run in the money in six out of seven lifetime tries over the grass here in Arcadia, with four wins.

A winner of the Grade II City of Hope (turf) Mile on Sept. 27, 2015 at Santa Anita, ‘AB’ went on to run seventh in the Grade II Seabiscuit Handicap in late November over Del Mar’s turf course after winning up north in the Bay Area at odds of 1-5 in a turf allowance. He then went on to run sixth in his first-ever try down the hillside in the Grade II Daytona on Dec. 26, though beaten only a length.

Alert Bay’s latest try over the turf, when favored at 2-1, resulted in a second to What a View in the Cal Cup Turf Classic at Santa Anita Jan. 30 going 1 1/8 miles. With two bullet works serving as his most recent over Golden Gate’s Tapeta surface up at his home base in Berkeley, CA, Alert Bay looks ready to fire.

“He does quite well at Santa Anita, he really likes this place,” said Wright following his win in the City of Hope....

The evening’s featured $20,000 upper-level pace saw Rockeyed Optimist ($3.40) brush aggressively to the lead on the backstretch, subsequently drawing off to a four-length win over his six rivals in 1:49.3.  Tim Tetrick settled the 5-year-old Rocknroll Hanover gelding just off pacesetters Sweet Beach (Anthony Napolitano) and Shooter’s Dream (Corey Callahan) through a :27.2 initial quarter before taking charge with nine-sixteenths to go.  After clearing, Rockeyed Optimist found himself uncontested on the lead through middle splits of :55.3 and 1:23.  Off the corner, Tetrick urged Rockeyed Optimist to accelerate away, and the response was instant.  The odds-on favorite kicked on to a decisive win over All Week (John Campbell), who rallied up the pegs to narrowly take second at 41-1 in a photograph with Aslan (Andy McCarthy) and 2014 Little Brown Jug winner Limelight Beach (Yannick Gingras).
Steve Elliott trains Rockeyed Optimist, now a 16-time winner, for the partnership of Perretti, Berkner, the A & B Stable, and Battaglia.  For Tetrick, the win was one of two on the card.  Brett Miller led all drivers with a hat trick, while Joe Bongiorno, Corey Callahan, and Jim Marohn, Jr. joined Tetrick with driving doubles.

Dovuto Hanover debuts Saturday at Big M
East Rutherford, N.J. — Following nearly nine months on the sidelines, Martin Scharf’s Dovuto Hanover prepared to commence his 6-year-old season with a pair of qualifiers earlier in the month.  In Saturday (February 27) evening’s featured $20,000 ninth race at The Meadowlands, he will tackle nine others on debut for trainer Richard “Nifty” Norman.
“He had some issues last year, only having six starts, but he’s been so far, so good,” said Norman of his new acquisition.  “I’m pretty happy with him so far.”
While installed the 3-1 morning line favorite, a tall task awaits the gelded son of Dragon Again.  Among those facing Dovuto Hanover are Erv Miller trainee Jet Airway (Marcus Miller, post 7), who rises off a decisive 1:50 win, the stout closer Ashley’s Husband (post 4) who reunites with Tim Tetrick after a ferocious :25.4 closing quarter propelled him to victory two starts back, and Aslan (Andy McCarthy, post 9), who charged off cover on local debut last week after solid bids in top-level fields at Yonkers.
Scott Zeron will handle the driving duties aboard Dovuto Hanover, who took his mark of 1:48.4 at The Meadowlands as a 3-year-old.  His greatest accomplishments came in 2014 where, as a 4-year-old, he won nine of 31 races–including top-level events at The Meadowlands, Pocono Downs, and on the Woodbine Entertainment Group circuit–and banked over...

The $100,000 Maxxam Gold Cup is the marquee feature of Saturday night’s Maxxam Gold Cup Racing Festival, but each of the three turf stakes on the ten-race card came up with full and highly competitive fields. Fillies and mares will star in the $50,000 Jersey Lilly Stakes and a solid group of classy turf sprinters will compete in the $50,000 Bucharest Turf Sprint. The $50,000 Texas Heritage Stakes for 3-year-olds will also be run on the Connally Turf Course for the first time.

As America’s first Triple Crown Champion jockey in 37 years, Victor Espinoza helped Thoroughbred racing project a positive image far beyond the confines of the Thoroughbred industry throughout 2015, thus elevating the sport’s exposure and acceptance to a level perhaps not seen since the 1970s.  Accordingly, Espinoza, a 43-year-old native of Mexico City, has been selected by a vote of jockeys nationwide as the winner of Santa Anita’s highly coveted 2016 George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award.

“It’s quite an honor for any rider to be selected by his peers as the winner of such a prestigious award,” said Terry Meyocks, National Manager of the Jockeys’ Guild.  “And I would like to congratulate Victor on this great achievement.”

In addition to numerous national television appearances through the 2015 Triple Crown and  last fall’s Breeders’ Cup World Championships, Espinoza also remained tireless in his efforts on behalf of cancer-stricken youth, donating 10 percent of his winnings to support pediatric cancer research at City of Hope, in nearby Duarte.

With the Bob Baffert-trained American Pharoah providing the horsepower, Espinoza gleefully proclaimed himself “The luckiest Mexican on earth,” on national television following their win in the Belmont Stakes June 6.
