IRISH-BRED MIRAGE TAKES $58,000 SANTA ANITA ALLOWANCE FEATURE BY A NECK UNDER PRAT;

CALLAGHAN TRAINEE GETS MILE ON TURF IN 1:35.87

Irish-Bred Mirage

ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 5, 2016)—Unhurried early, Irish-bred Mirage saved ground throughout and rallied determinedly under Flavien Prat to take Friday’s $58,000 Santa Anita allowance feature by a neck.  Trained by Simon Callaghan, she covered a flat mile on turf in 1:35.87.

Breaking from the nine post in a field of ten 3-year-old fillies, Mirage, who added blinkers today for the first time in her sixth career start, folded over cleverly while next to last going into the Club House turn and wheeled three-wide when called upon turning for home.

“Today worked out perfect,” said Callaghan.  “They went quick and we had planned to take her back and save ground.  Flavien rode her perfectly and I think a mile is perfect for her.  I don’t think we’d want to go much further.  I added the blinkers to help her focus really, nothing more than that.”

The second choice in the wagering at 4-1, she paid $10.60, $6.20 and $3.40.            .

Owned by Mrs. Fitriani Hay, Mirage notched her first stateside win and improved her overall mark to 6-2-1-0.  With the winner’s share of $34,800, she increased her earnings to...

Santa Anita Pick 6 Carryover Should Hit $400k

These carryovers keep climbing high and Santa Anita on Saturday, Feb 6th is no exception.  IdaBet.com players might want to take a look at the nine-race card that includes four graded states.  First Post is 12:30 Pacific.

ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 5, 2016)—There is a Pick Six carryover of $40,671 into Saturday at Santa Anita and it’s expected Saturday’s total Pick Six pool should approach $400,000 as four graded stakes will be included in an outstanding nine-race program.

With the Grade III, $150,000 Robert B. Lewis carded as race four on Saturday, the Pick Six will get off to a classy beginning as Bob Baffert’s talented Mor Spirit, to be ridden by Gary Stevens, has been installed as the 8-5 morning line favorite in a field of seven 3-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles.

Saturday’s fifth race, the Grade II, $300,000 Las Virgenes Stakes, will mark the 3-year-old debut of undefeated Eclipse Champion Filly Songbird, who will be ridden by Mike Smith and is a prohibitive 1-5 morning line favorite for Jerry Hollendorfer.

An important steppingstone to the $1 million Santa Anita Handicap, the Grade II, $500,000 San Antonio Stakes, which is carded as Saturday’s seventh race, is headed by 5-2 morning line favorite Imperative, who is trained by Richard Baltas and will be ridden by Mike Smith.

The Grade II, $200,000 San Marcos Stakes, at a mile and a quarter on turf for older horses, has been carded as the eighth race and offers fans a field of 11, with English-bred Hay Dude serving as the  5-2 morning line choice.  Trained by Phil D’Amato, Hay Dude will be ridden by apprentice David Lopez.

First post time on Saturday is at 12:30 p.m., admission gates open at 10:30 a.m. Pacific

EARLY DOUBLE- 3-1, 3-4, 4-1, 4-4 PICK-5 – 3,4 w 1,4 w 6,7 w 5 w 1,2,9

RACE ONE

3-ITALIAN STALLION…was on the move under the wire first time and showed strong trot mid-mile. Dips to very advantageous spot here. 4-TYMAL RECAP…very strong grinding forward effort in last and didn’t quit until he hit the wire first. Stays put in same class, as well. 7-MYSTICAL SHOPPER…probably on engine here. Mare tends to be somewhat of an “on and off” performer. Which one shows up????

RACE TWO

1-SPAGHETTI EDDIE…does step up a couple of notches but can’t ignore last performance from outside post. Getting very sharp now. 4-SPINFINITI…dips down from Open class to amiable spot here. Tough to spot foes that many lengths early when mile is in 1:50.1. 3-ALONEINSPADES…been very sharp in recent events. Very versatile and could be on the bullet train early then yielding for cozy trip.

RACE THREE

7-GRANDMA JAN’S GEMS…very impressive showing in debut. Could be on the choo-choo train early to control the festivities in here. 6-KATCH KANNA…despite slow pace early on, grinded forward entire last lap to get the job done. Will be interesting to see faster pace. 3-LISA ON TOP…gave a bit of a hint in last showing forward momentum 3/8ths in to top of the lane. Can “make” the ticket off cover.

RACE FOUR

PENTAFECTA- 5 w 1,2,7,9 ALL THE WAY

5-GROOVEY KID…rare form these days. Kind of hard to...

UNDEFEATED ECLIPSE CHAMPION FILLY SONGBIRD TOWERS OVER RIVALS

AS SHE MAKES HER 3-YEAR-OLD DEBUT IN SATURDAY’S $300,000 LAS VIRGENES STAKES AT FLAT MILE

ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 3, 2016)—Fox Hill Farms’ undefeated Eclipse Award winning Songbird towers over six rivals as she makes her 3-year-old debut Saturday in Santa Anita’s Grade II, $300,000 Las Virgenes Stakes at a flat mile.

Idle since taking the Grade I Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies by 5 ¾ lengths on Oct. 31 at Keeneland, the Jerry Hollendorfer-trained Songbird will take a big step down the road to the Grade I Kentucky Oaks here on Saturday.

Considered by many industry experts to be the best 3-year-old in America, regardless of gender, Songbird’s Breeders’ Cup victory was even more impressive than her margin of victory would indicate, which led to immediate speculation that she may be pointed to the Kentucky Derby trail, but her connections, Rick Porter, of Foxhill, and Hollendorfer, have been steadfast in their commitment to stay with her own kind and point for the Oaks in three months.

Undefeated in four starts, the Kentucky-bred daughter of Medaglia d’Oro was a handy 4 ½ length winner of Santa Anita’s Grade I, 1 1/16 miles Chandelier Stakes two starts back on Sept. 26 and will thus be making her second start at The Great Race Place in the Las Virgenes.  With earnings of $1,502,000, Songbird, who has won all of her races in virtual gate to wire fashion, will be ridden for the fifth consecutive time by Mike Smith.

Songbird’s primary opposition would appear to be trainer Phil D’Amato’s Street Fancy, who rallied from off the pace at odds of 6-1 to take the Grade I Starlet...
