ONE LUCKY TICKET TAKES SANTA ANITA SINGLE TICKET JACKPOT OF $466,919.40 ON MONDAY

With five different tickets “live” and thus eligible to produce a life-changing score, including one that singled 5-2 post time favorite Red Shelby, it was Gone to Town, an 8-1 shot trained by Hector Palma and ridden by Alonso Quinonez, that sailed home in Monday’s nightcap at Santa Anita to win by four lengths which resulted in one lucky winning ticket worth $466,919.40.

Purchased for $2,880 at the Hollywood Park Casino in Inglewood, Calif., the winner’s purchase contributed to a total Pick Six pool on Monday of $524,462.

With a special nine-race card on Martin Luther King Day, Monday’s Pick Six got off to a rocky start with Trickonomics winning the fourth race by a half length under Kyle Frey. Off at 38-1, he paid $79.00 to win.

Form prevailed in race five, as Afleet Ascent, ridden by Rafael Bejarano, connected by 1 ½ lengths as the 9-5 favorite and paid $5.80 to win.

Monday’s sixth race was no stunner either, as 2-1 second choice Jimmythisnjimthat, with Tyler Baze up, won by three quarters of a length and paid $6.80 to win.

The Grade III, $100,000 Megahertz Stakes served as the seventh race and it was taken by the second choice in the wagering, Madame Stripes, who was off at 7-2 with Kent Desormeaux and paid $9.00 to win.

Monday’s eighth race went to the third choice in the straight wagering, Hot Sean, who at odds of 7-2, won by three quarters of a length with Joe Talamo up and paid $9.20 to win.

Live racing resumes with an eight-race card on Friday at Santa Anita. First post time is at 1 p.m.

Yonkers Peek At Program-Tuesday, January 16th

A PEEK AT THE PROGRAM–TUESDAY, JANUARY 16

Some insights into tonight’s racing program for our IdaBet players:

1ST RACE – (7) BEGINNER’S LUCK was perfect-trip, ‘peeked’ winner in latest. Any number of competent ones here, but we stay ‘cause he’s square price.

3RD RACE – (4) BASS PLAYER could not sustain first-up try in seasonal bow, hanging around for final envelope. Same venue, but very camera-shy crowd.

4TH RACE – (5) CAPPOZZO ditches ‘pair of sevens’ for bit better getaway locale. Could not sustain move from back of bus in latest, but effort did encourage.

5TH RACE – (1) SUDDEN CHANGE N pressed the issued from pole in last try, yielding to favorite who came to complete stop. Some less happenstance here?

6TH RACE – (4) ANALYZE was last here from second tier, prior an eight-hole against better. Always been able to work at this level, so gets mid-pack nod.

11TH RACE – (1) ARI ALLSTAR has done minimal of late, though last trio from outer half. We surmise he puts forth decent effort after winning finale draw.

——

$2 +/- (thru Sun., Jan. 14) – 12 wins ($123.70)

from 36 ($72) selex (+$51.70, just don’t look for logic)

highest-priced winner – MORE THAN MANY ($21.80)

lowest-priced winner – OZONE BLUE CHIP ($4.60)

Buffalo Raceway To Try Again On Wednesday, January 17th

After a pair of cancellations due to poor weather conditions over the weekend, Buffalo Raceway will once again try to get the 2018 season off the ground with an 11-race card slated for Wednesday evening (Jan. 17) beginning at 5 p.m.
It will be ladies first in the opener on Wednesday with a full field of eight colliding in the $9,500 Filly and Mare Open Pace.
Little Joke (Bettor’s Delight-Town Joke) gets the 3-to-1 morning line nod from the four hole with Billy Davis Jr. in the sulky. The 6-year-old mare has four wins and a second place finish in her last six appearances and looks to add to her $157,250 career earnings.
Voltina is no stranger to the winner’s circle after winning eight times in 44 attempts in 2017. Voltina will be guided by Kevin Cummings from the five post and put $69,456 in the bank last year.
Miss Irish Rose A, a winner of 11 races in just 26 attempts in 2017, gets the services of defending Buffalo Raceway Driver of the Year Larry Stalbaum from the six spot. The 6-year-old was last spotted at Yonkers Raceway on January 12 where she tried to cut the mile but faded late and finished sixth.
There will be free programs for both the Wednesday and Friday night programs.
The weekend will also feature $3 off the popular Friday Fish Fry in the Winner’s Circle Cafe and $3 off the home style turkey dinner on Saturday evening.
The Winter Harness Racing Handicapping Challenge will also be contested on Saturday night with $850 in cash prizes available. There is a $10 entry fee.

REDDAM’S MOPOTISM PREVAILS BY A HEAD IN A THREE-WAY PHOTO TO TAKE SATURDAY’S GRADE II, $200,000 LA CANADA STAKES

REDDAM’S MOPOTISM PREVAILS BY A HEAD IN A THREE-WAY PHOTO TO TAKE SATURDAY’S GRADE II, $200,000 LA CANADA STAKES; TRAINED BY O’NEILL & RIDDEN BY GUTIERREZ, UNCLE MO FILLY GETS MILE IN 1:37.29

In a thrilling three-horse photo finish, Reddam Racing’s Mopotism prevailed by head to take Saturday’s Grade II, $200,000 La Canada Stakes at Santa Anita. Ridden by Mario Gutierrez and trained by Doug O’Neill, the 4-year-old daughter of Uncle Mo got a flat mile in 1:37.29.

Graded stakes placed on four occasions, Mopotism, who was most recently third in the Grade I, seven furlong La Brea Stakes here on Dec. 26, notched her first graded stakes win as she stretched out a furlong today.

Attentive to the pace throughout, Mopostism was a stalking second to Northern California invader Mended heading into the far turn and was all-out while a length behind her with a furlong to run, but gradually wore her down as longshot La Force forged up the rail late to make it a three-way thriller.

The second choice in a field of eight older fillies and mares at 2-1, Mopotism paid $6.80, $3.60 and $3.00.

Purchased for $300,000 at a 2-year-old in training sale in March, 2016, Mopotism improved her overall mark to 15-3-4-2. With the winner’s share of $120,000, she increased her earnings to $561,200.

Claimed for a paltry $12,500 eleven starts back at Golden Gate Fields on Jan. 6, 2017, front-running mended had rattled off 10 consecutive wins for trainer John Martin, including a restricted Claiming Crown stakes going a flat mile at Gulfstream Park Dec. 2, which was also her most recent start.

Sent to the lead by Golden Gate-based Ricardo Gonzalez, she laid down splits of 23.81, 47.94, 1:12.32 and 1:24.50 and showed tremendous courage in defeat.

Off at 7-1, Mended paid $6.20 and $4.00.

German-bred La Force, who was also in close attendance throughout, was off at 27-1 with Drayden Van Dyke...

Empire Line impresses guys and dolls alike in Monday’s Damon Runyon Win

West Point Thoroughbreds and RAP Racing’s Empire Line overtook Morning Breez in the stretch and fended off Evaluator’s late charge at the wire to win the 39th running of the $100,000 Damon Runyon for 3-year-old New York-breds  Monday at Aqueduct Racetrack on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Empire Line, who won his debut at six furlongs on December 1, handled his first stakes appearance and first route in impressive fashion, staying off the early pace as Morning Breez went the opening quarter-mile in 23.25 seconds and the half in in 47.24.

Morning Breez maintained the lead out of the turn and into the stretch before jockey Eric Cancel set Empire Line down and took the lead nearing the final furlong. Evaluator, who went three-wide, surged from the outside to challenge for supremacy, but Empire Line held on by a nose, completing one mile in 1:38.75 on the fast main track.

“I had been working the horse and we were able to figure some things out to help him improve his racing,” Cancel said. “He ran huge. I give him credit and I give credit to [trainer] George Weaver’s team for doing a great job with the horse. Today, he kept on going for me.

“I wanted to be on the outside on the trip because he feels a little more comfortable,” Cancel said. “He gives me a little more, so everything worked out. When the other horse [Evaluator] came right next to me, I thought I was going to get beat. But he felt it and just kept on trying and never gave up and the other horse didn’t get there in time.”

Off as the 2-1 favorite, Empire Line paid $6 on a $2 win wager. The Morning Line colt improved to 2-for-2 and increased his career bankroll to $93,000.

“We always liked the horse. From Saratoga to now he always slowly progressed and got better, fitter, stronger,” said Blair Golen, assistant to Weaver. “He...
