RECORD TOTAL LATE PICK FIVE POOL OF $1.7 MILLION REACHED SUNDAY AT SANTA ANITA

CARRYOVER FROM SATURDAY OF $192,748 GENERATES $1.5 MILLION IN ‘NEW MONEY’

An astounding total Late Pick Five pool of $1,709,442 was reached at fifth race post time today at Santa Anita Park. The 50 cent Late Pick Five, which requires players to select the winners of the final five races on each day’s card, had carried over from Saturday in the amount of $192,748.

The spurred investment of $1,516,694 in “new money” on Sunday, creating the astronomical total “Late Five” pool which exceeded $1.7 million.

With trainer Sam Scolamieri’s Touchdown U S C winning by a half length as the 2-1 favorite in race five, the wager got off to a formful beginning.

Favored Money Maven (Yannick Gingras, $5.40) held sway after a long grind Sunday afternoon (Jan. 14^th), winning Yonkers Raceway’s $50,000 Open Handicap Trot.

The field of nine went as the first of seven ‘French’ trots, with Money Maven away from third from post position No. 3.

Last week’s off-the-pace winner, Consolidator (Jim Marohn Jr.), left hard here. The lass worked around pole-sitting Cash Me Out (Eric Goodell), laying down early intervals of :28.4 and :57.4.

Money Maven, snapped in a very good effort a week ago, edged from third, with second-tier Tight Lines (Jeff Gregory) second-over. The fave engaged a stubborn Consolidator through a 1:28.2 three-quarters and a 1:57.2 milepost, finally putting the ma’am away early in the lane.

Cash Me Out then slid out after Tight Lines retreated, having dead aim but seemingly hanging late. Money Maven held sway by a neck, getting the mile-and-quarter in 2:28.3. Deep closer Home’n Dry (Matt Kakaley) and Melady’s Monet arrived late for third and fourth, respectively, with Luminosity (George Brennan) settling for the final pay envelope.

For Money Maven, a 9-year-old Revenue S gelding owned by Kapildeo Singh and trained by Rene Allard, it was his first win in a pair of seasonal starts. The exacta paid $18, with triple returning $66.50.

The season’s first ‘New York, New York Double’ offered a winning combination of 4-Lezendary (Aqueduct’s 3^rd race) and 1-Inukchuk Chuck (Yonkers’ 5^th race) paid $55 for every correct $1 wager. Total pool was $6,236.

According to trainer Richard Baltas, it’s his race to lose. And while his Insta Erma may go favored in Monday’s Grade III, $100,000 Megahertz Stakes for older fillies and mares at one mile over the Santa Anita turf, she’ll need to have her running shoes on to handle the likes of Laseen, Chocolate Coated, Madame Stripes and others as she faces a total of seven rivals in what appears to be a wide-open race.

INSTA ERMA

A fast finishing third, beaten 1 ½ lengths in the Grade I Matriarch at one mile over the Del Mar turf Nov. 26, this 5-year-old mare by Pioneerof the Nile was a game nose winner of the one mile turf Swingtime Stakes here two starts back on Oct. 7 and will be making her fourth start for Baltas on Monday. She possesses the best last-out Beyer Speed figure (98) and with two out her four wins coming at one mile on turf, she should looms the horse to beat in the Megahertz.

LASEEN

A troubled third, beaten three quarters of a length in the Grade III Robert J. Frankel Stakes going a mile and one eighth on turf Dec. 30, Irish-bred Laseen will hope to get clear sailing on Monday as she shortens up a furlong with Victor Espinoza back aboard. Full of run at the rail a half mile from home, she didn’t get the room needed until deep stretch. Winless from 10 starts last year, she logged a pair of seconds and four third place finishes at primarily longer distances. A fast pace would be to her benefit.

5^TH RACE – (1) NIALL HANOVER could not have been uglier after gazed in latest. Gets one more crack winning draw before banished to ‘pay no mind’ list.

7^TH RACE – (4) SAPPHIRE BREEZE is (presumably) enthralled with this venue after ‘full house’ (three 8’s, two 7’s) in last quintet. Enough to try her here.

8^TH RACE – (5) IN THE DARK won first two local tries, then threw in pair of ‘eh’ efforts. Possibly bit short in ’18 bow, but we’re suckers for perceived price.

10^TH RACE – (5) NEWSWATCH did get outer-venue support a week ago, never coming closing to reaching. Mid-pack getaway makes him more aggressive.

11^TH RACE – (3) BETTOR’S WESTERN has had more than his share of bad draws/trips. Gazed with Philly flyer in last and another with finale post relief.
