Los Alamitos Winter Meet to Feature Pair of Grade I Races for 2-Year Olds

For those IdaBet players gearing up for Los Alamitos to start there are some featured races to watch for.  A pair of Grade I races for 2-year-olds and the return of the Grade II, $200,000 Bayakoa Stakes highlight the 2017 Winter meet at Los Alamitos.

The 12-day season will begin Thursday, Nov. 30 and continue through Sunday, Dec. 17.

Racing will be conducted on a Thursday-Sunday basis. Post time will be 1 p.m. on weekdays and 12:30 p.m. on weekends.

The $300,000 Starlet for fillies and the $300,000 Los Alamitos CashCall Futurity will be run Saturday, Dec. 9. Both races are at 1 1/16 miles and being offered at Los Alamitos for the fourth time. The two significant races were run previously at Hollywood Park (1981-2013).

Abel Tasman, who is favored to be named the champion 3-year-old filly of 2017, won the 2016 Starlet for trainer Simon Callaghan while Hall of Fame conditioner Bob Baffert earned his record ninth Futurity victory with Mastery last Dec. 10.

Baffert has won the first three runnings of the Futurity at Los Alamitos, capturing the 2014 renewal with Dortmund and scoring with Mor Spirit in 2015.

The Bayakoa, which is for fillies and mares (3-year-olds & up) at 1 1/16 miles, will be run at Los Alamitos for the first time since 2014.

Named in honor of the multiple-graded stakes winning mare owned by Frank and Janis Whitham and trained by Hall of Famer Ron McAnally, the Bayakoa wasn’t offered in 2015 and was run at Del Mar a year ago. It will be run Sunday, Dec. 3.

Yonkers Peek At The Program – TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 21

Some insights into tonight’s racing program for our IdaBet.com players.

(reminder that after this evening. we’re dark for live racing

until Sunday, Nov. 26th @ 11:10 AM.  Happy Turkey!)

3RD RACE – (1) FEEL THE DARKSIDE hasn’t embarrassed herself against better. Slips down ladder with ‘for sale’ sign, taken to get a trip behind ‘Amanda.’

4TH RACE – (4) TEMPSTER HANOVER goes second off dip to the bottom feeders and first decent draw in quite some time. Need not be much to whip these.

6TH RACE – (6) SAM’S ESCAPE grinded by lone logical rival in ‘peeked’ win last out. Closed too late from this venue two back in slop, can prevail if closer.

8TH RACE – (2) SOS JUSTIFIED has become sort of bad ritual of us, racing just well enough to sucker this missive in again. Would be novel to see him leave.

10TH RACE – (4) ASHOK ACE is generally useful at this optional claiming level. Outgamed for second off two-hole trip in latest, but taken to find a way here.

Cougar Bait Pays Instant Dividends at Plainridge Park

Cougar Bait Pays Instant Dividends at Plainridge Park

Nov 20, 2017

Join us on Tuesday for some racing with Plainridge Park and before you wager here is some  racing news:  In Plainville, MA, Cougar Bait completed his 2-year-old campaign in impressive style, winning four of his last five starts. But too many inconsistent outings and only one win this year led to him become catalog number 1575 in the Black Book at Harrisburg earlier this month. That is where Joel Wheeler cast the winning bid and brought the altered son of Western Terror home to Plainridge Park.

In his first start in his new barn, Cougar Bait certainly turned some heads as he went from dead-last to victory in a quarter mile in the $12,000 conditioned pace at The Ridge on Monday afternoon (Nov. 20), setting a new seasonal mark for himself in the process.

Horses left four-deep off the gate and remained three-deep to the quarter before Beachchip Hanover (Chris Long) finally found the pylons. But as soon as he cleared, Forever Worth It (DT Sumner) was right at him and the two battled to the half in :56. As they motored up the backside, Forever Worth It packed it in and the outer flow that had formed behind him went three deep around. Third-over and still ninth in that grouping was Cougar Bait (Wally Watson).

In the far turn Beachchip Hanover was starting to tire, so everyone behind his had tipped out around him and Cougar Bait was widest of all; five deep and near the I-495 ramp. With horses coming from everywhere in the stretch, Cougar Bait was in the middle of the track pacing like a machine and simply blew by everyone to win by a half-length in 1:53.3 with a sharp :28.2 last quarter into a stiff wind. Six of the nine horses hit the wire withing two lengths of each other.
