KAABRAAJ TOO FAST AT TURF PARADISE

Kaabraaj continued his eventful 2016 campaign for trainer Jeff Metz with a sharp performance in the $35,000 Bienvenidos Stakes on opening day Saturday at Turf Paradise.

Ridden by Eswan Flores, the 4-year-old Washington-bred gelding led gate-to-wire for a 2 ¼-length triumph in 1:15.81 for 6½ furlongs and paid $7 as the second choice in the wagering. Kaabraaj earned an 87 Beyer and $18,228 for owners Warlock Stables and Horse Players Racing Club.

Kaabraaj has two wins in 2016, the Bienvenidos and an April 23 allowance race in which he set an Emerald Downs record 1:06.86 for 6 furlongs. Kaabraaj also finished second to Emerald Downs’ Horse of the Meeting O B Harbor in a 5½-furlong allowance race, and third to O B Harbor in the $50,000 Governor’s Stakes. There also was a trip to California for three very tough stakes engagements, the best result being a fourth in the Grade 1 Bing Crosby at Del Mar.

Gunned to the lead by Flores—who led all riders with five wins opening week at Turf Paradise—Kaabraaj set fractions of :22.95, :44.93 and 1:09.14, and repelled 3-to-5 favorite Storm Power in the lane.

Absolutely Cool edged Storm Power for second to make it an all Washington-bred exacta. State champion sprinter the last three years, Absolutely Cool earned $5,880 and pushed his lifetime total to $406,982 for owner/breeder Karl Krieg. The 9-year-old Absolute Harmony gelding is the 27th Washington-bred to surpass the $400,000 mark.

Zia Park Kicks Off 56 Day Race Meet September 10th

We wanted our IdaBet.com players to know that Land of Enchantment, New Mexico Cup Days Lead 2016 Zia Park Stakes Schedule.

Thanks for choosing IdaBet.com and for supporting Zia Park in 2016!

The fourth Land of Enchantment card and New Mexico Cup day highlight  Zia Park’s 2016 stakes schedule that, all told, includes 32 races for both thoroughbreds and quarter horses totaling $3,850,000 in purses.  Zia’s 56-day meet will get underway on September 10 and run through December 13.

The Land of Enchantment day on November 23 will again serve as the centerpiece of the Zia Park meet and is led by the fourth running of the $300,000 Zia Park Oaks for three-year-old fillies run at 1 1/16 miles.  West Point Thoroughbred’s Lavender Chrissie won the 2015 edition of the Zia Park Oaks, which came on the heels of Fox Hill Farm’s Cassatt’s triumph in 2014.  The $200,000 Zia Park Derby and $150,000 Zia Park Championship round out the six-figure unrestricted stakes for thoroughbreds.  A trio of quarter horse races, including the $150,000 Zia Park Quarter Horse Championship (G1) and $140,000 New Mexico Quarter Horse Filly & Mare Championship (RG1) will also be run on Land of Enchantment day once again.

While the Zia Park Oaks and Zia Park Derby may lure some of the country’s top sophomores to the track on November 23, the richest racing on the Zia Park schedule will be October 30 with the New Mexico Cup lineup featuring the top New Mexico-breds in training.   With $1,810,000 in total purses, the 12 stakes on New Mexico Cup day represents nearly half the monetary value of the meet’s stakes calendar.  The 8 thoroughbred stakes are headlined by the $180,000 New Mexico Classic Rocky Gulch Championship, while the $170,000 New Mexico Classic Quarter Horse Championship (RGI) leads the 4 quarter horse stakes.
