Campbell, Tetrick head 3R Driver’s Tournament June 5

The Quebec Jockey Club has announced they will host their inaugural All-Star Spring Driver’s Tournament at the Hippodrome 3R on Sunday, June 5 with John Campbell and Tim Tetrick headlining the top drivers that will compete.

Featured will be the greatest lineup of professional harness racing drivers ever to grace the 3R half-mile oval.

In addition to Campbell and Tetrick will be the Grand Circuit’s leading driver Yannick Gingras, Trois-Rivieres native Daniel Dube, Ontario leading drivers Sylvain Filion and Jody Jamieson with 3R leading reinsman Denis St Pierre and Mario Charron completing the lineup.

The eight all-star drivers will compete in eight races on the race program with a prize purse of $10,000. There will be an early meet and greet session with the drivers and interviews throughout the day.

“What a superb tournament this will be,” said Vincent Trudel, general manager at the Hippodrome 3R. “Never before has such a great field of world class drivers ever been assembled to compete here at 3R. Racing fans around the world will be in for a special treat on June 5. This will be a big day in the history of horse racing in Quebec.”

For both Campbell and Tetrick, it will be the first time they have ever driven at the Hippodrome 3R.

“I can’t wait to come to 3R for this tournament,” said Hall of Famer John Campbell. “The last time I was in Quebec was in the 1980’s when I drove in the Prix D’Ete at the Hippodrome Blue Bonnets in Montreal. It will be great to compete for the first time at the Hippodrome 3R.”

“The Quebec Jockey Club is doing such a great job at the Hippodrome 3R,” said Quebec native Yannick Gingras. “And this tournament will be super. The racetrack there is very good. It allows the fans to be right up close to the action – closer than any track I have ever competed at. They have also done a good job on their racing surface and their half-mile track is as good as any in...

Sea Calisi takes G2 Sheepshead Bay, gives Ortiz sweep of stakes
By Najja Thompson
ELMONT, N.Y. – Heavily favored Sea Calisi made her American debut a winning one, taking the lead in midstretch and going on to a 2 ½-length victory in the Grade 2, $200,000 Sheepshead Bay on Saturday at Belmont Park.
Owned by Martin Schwartz, who bought the 4-year-old filly in Europe and turned her over to trainer Chad Brown, Sea Calisi was content to save ground at the back of the pack as Robillard led through an opening quarter in 25.47 seconds, with the half going in 52.09. Still last on the far turn but roused by jockey Jose Ortiz as the field straightened for home, Sea Calisi made a quick move to grab the lead approaching the eighth pole and hit the wire in 2:18.90 for 1 3/8 miles over the yielding turf.
“The plan was to cover her up, so that’s what I did for most of the race,” said Ortiz, who won five races on the card, including the Grade 3 Westchester aboard Anchor Down and the Grade 3 Fort Marcy with Ironicus. “I took her to the outside a little before the quarter pole and she did it all by herself. I just showed her the whip a couple of times and she just rolled by them and then I tried to ease her up and save some horse for next time.
“I was worried about the slow pace,” he added. “It was a small field but I think she was the best horse of the race. She finished third in the Darley Oaks. She’s a great filly and I want to thank the owner and the trainer for the...

Anchor Down runs aweigh in G3 Westchester
By Jenny Kellner
ELMONT, N.Y. – Alto Racing’s Anchor Down splashed his way to a convincing 6 ¾-length victory in Saturday’s Grade 3, $150,000 Westchester at Belmont Park, picking up his first graded stakes win and stamping himself a contender for the Grade 1, $1.25 million Metropolitan Handicap on June 11.
Most recently seen finishing fourth in the Grade 1 Carter Handicap in April, Anchor Down was sent straight to the lead by jockey Jose Ortiz, where he ticked off fractions of 23.28, 46.88 and 1:10.84 with Stormin Monarcho and Samraat in pursuit. Shaking clear of those rivals once straightened for home, the 5-year-old gray son of Tapit rolled unchallenged to the finish line, covering the mile in 1:35.10 over the muddy, sealed track.
“The horse broke great and when I asked him to go at the quarter pole, he just exploded and gave me everything he had; I didn’t have to use my whip,” said Ortiz. “I didn’t push him too much and he gave me a great run.”
The victory was the first of the year for Anchor Down, who began 2016 with a pair of third-place finishes at Gulfstream Park, including the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Handicap, in which he was disqualified and placed fourth. Overall, he is 4-1-2 from 13 career starts and now has earned $276,920.
“This race has been on our radar for a while,” said Byron Hughes, assistant to winning trainer Todd Pletcher. “I wasn’t surprised he won so convincingly; he’s put in some big efforts before against some nice horses. He’d breezed well for this race, and he’d been training well since his last race. The Metropolitan Handicap [Grade 1, $1.25...
