INTEREST AMPS UP FOR FLORIDA DERBY SHOWDOWN

The racing world awaits the multi-story lined showdown April 2 in the $1 million

Florida Derby between the two undefeated favorites for the Kentucky Derby, Santa Anita-based Nyquist, champion two-year-old male of 2015 trained by Doug O’Neill, and Kiaran McLaughlin-trained Mohaymen, winner of the Holy Bull and Fountain of Youth at his home track of Gulfstream Park, site of the Florida Derby.

One with a vested interest is Steve Rothblum, a trainer in his own right for 30 years and an integral part of Team O’Neill’s success during his nine-year run with them. Call him an advisor, racing manager, it doesn’t really matter to Rothblum, who took time Sunday morning to scope the Florida Derby, which, for all intents and purposes, looks like a match race on paper.

“It has all the ingredients to create major fan interest, for sure,” said Rothblum, whose business card reads, ‘Team O’Neill: Steve Rothblum.’

“It’s an East-West rivalry and it’s great for racing, it’s fantastic, two unbeaten three-year-olds hooking up.

“We’re taking a little the worst of it having to ship down to a race track Mohaymen has already won on going two turns a couple times, so he has a...

Race 1: 5- High Flyin Sara – DeRuntz hands the lines to Wrenn and looks for some results. 1- ICU Charliet – Could be tough from the rail. 8- Stirling Cordelia – Could make the ticket despite starting from the far outside. 2- Annakate – Was a winner last time out but is facing tougher competition this time around. Race 2: 3- Catchajolt – Draws into a race where several could win; this one gets the slight call over the others to complete the Daily Double. 1- Forever LoverLooks to be tough from the rail. 6-Uptown Romance– One of several in here that could make the ticket. 2- Fox Valley Smooch – Could garner a minor share in here. Race 3: 9- Red Hot Lucy – Competes in a race where several could win; this one could edge-out the competition. 2- Always Jazzy – Has the ability to be prominently placed on the ticket. 1- TSM Soul Sister – Could be tough from the rail. Race 4: 6- Rocks Confession – Faded in the stretch in her most recent effort; could see things through tonight. 3- BB Rockette – Was a winner last time out and looks to be right there again tonight. 1- In The Wheelhouse – Could be in the thick of the action from the rail. 2- Cabaret – Has as good of a shot as any in here to complete the Superfecta. RACE ONE EARLY DOUBLE- 3-1, 3-6, 3-8, 8-1, 8-6, 8-8 PICK-5 – 3,8 w 1,6,8 w 1 w 1,2 w 6,8,9 3-BOLD STRIKE…has good gate speed to gain the top spot for an early yield for garden trip. Been facing tougher crowd. 8-IMMINENT RESPONSE…was chewed up and spit out in last and still hung in there gamely at the end. On the engine here. 4-SORRENTO HALL…been giving hints last couple start. Made nice double-bubble move 5/16s out in last & held on well.

RACE TWO 8-ADO DUHARAS…kind of an “iffy” proposition but, if minds his manners, has the goods to show his heels in this event. 1-CHIP CHIP PAGE…took her a while to find her best stride but, once revved up, was rocking and rolling right to the wire. 6-BLACK AUTUMN…lightly raced four year-old got a picture perfect journey in last and was one stride away from the win.

RACE THREE 1-ST PETE STAR…first start back in almost a month was very credible but came up a little bit short late. Should be tighter. 4-WESTERN LEGEND…came from out of the clouds in last to nail it in the final stride or two. Steps up but form is solid. 2-VAN GUNDY HANOVER…been hampered by outside posts in recent but drew much better & can turn on afterburners!!

RACE FOUR PENTAFECTA – (Box) 1,2,3,4,8 1-McGREAT…was used very hard early in last from outside post & then shuffled backside. Should be cozily close in here. 2-A FOOL FOR MARK…gave a nice hint in last showing backside pace :27.4. Patient drive could benefit when it counts here. 4-FREE LOVE…gets some class relief here after denting...

Burton Blue Chip Springs Upset In Buffalo Raceway Feature

We wanted you to know Buffalo Raceway had their own version of ‘March Madness’ in the $10,000 Open Pace on Saturday night (March 19) as Burton Blue Chip delivered a $21.40 upset victory in a seasonal best 1:56.0 over the fast track.
Drawing the rail, Burton Blue Chip managed a perfect pocket trip as Western Alumni (Jim McNeight) posted fractions on the front end of 28.3, 58.1 and 1:27.0. In the stretch run, the two closers, Youwillwishyouhad and China Dream were nowhere to be found, thus leaving Burton Blue Chip and Western Alumni to battle it out for top honors.
Driver Lee Dahn gave Burton Blue Chip a little encouragement in the lane and the 7-year-old gelding responded to roll past Western Alumni, scoring the 3/4-length decision. Cobble Beach (David McNeight III), the lukewarm favorite, finished in third.
Co-owned by trainer Lee Dahn and Larry Dahn, Burton Blue Chip (American Ideal-Crickets Can Talk) has now recorded two wins in seven tries in 2016, earning $12,260 and $126,757 lifetime.
Buffalo Raceway’s leading driver Jack Flanigen had a three-bagger while Todd Cummings doubled.
Trainers JD Perrin and Mihajlo Zdjelar Jr. each conditioned two winners.
Racing continues on Wednesday night with an 11-race card scheduled for 5 p.m.

Art History tops in Big M feature; another grand slam for Zeron

We thought our IdaBet.com players would want to know that Art History ($3.60) has been on a tear of late, reeling off three straight wins over increasingly difficult competition.  His most recent triumph came on Saturday (March 19) evening’s featured $20,000 top-level pace at The Meadowlands, giving driver Scott Zeron one of his four wins on the 12-race program.

Art History controlled most of the terms in the featured sixth event and held sway from a hard-closing K-Lees Shakenbake, employing a :26.1 last quarter to prevail over top-level company in 1:51.2 over fast going.  Scott Zeron used the 5-year-old Western Ideal gelding to seize the lead after a :27.4 first quarter, working clear of Sweet Rock (Corey Callahan) upon reaching the backstretch.

Following a well-rated :57.2 middle half, Art History accelerated clear of his eight foes in mid-stretch–but remained under pursuit from the first-over Ashley’s Husband (Vinny Ginsburg) and K-Lees Shakenbake (Brett Miller), who vaulted off cover to chase via a :25.3 closing split.  Art History had just enough to prevail, a neck better than K-Lees Shakenbake in the end.  Ashley’s Husband stayed on for third, while Sweet Rock tired a bit amid his chase, finishing fourth.
Steve Elliott trains 13-time winner Art History for Kenneth Klein and the Old Block Stables.
For Zeron, the win with Art History began a natural hat trick, and was one of his four on the night.  The 26-year-old driver also teamed up with Mel Mara ($7.40, 1:49.1) in race 7, McArdles Lightning ($3.40, 1:50.4) in race 8, and Hope for Badlands ($3.80, 1:52.4) in race 11.

Total handle for the 12-race program was $2,926,995, marking an increase of $324,605 over the corresponding Saturday night program in 2015.
Live racing returns to the Meadowlands on Friday, March 25, with first post at 7:15 p.m....
