Napolitano wins five at Big M; Rockeyed Optimist repeats

IdaBet Players ought to know that after Scott Zeron’s grand slam on Friday, driver Anthony Napolitano one-upped his youthful rival on Saturday (March 5) evening at The Meadowlands, winning five of the 13 races.

After a pillar-to-post win in the opener with Sweet Justice ($10.80, 1:55.2), the 34-year-old Napolitano prevailed with odds-on favorite Honey I’m Home ($3.40, 1:52) in the third before back-to-back minor upsets in the seventh and eighth with K Slater ($19.80, 1:52.2) and K-Lees Shakenbake ($15.80, 1:50.1) respectively.  Napolitano closed the night on a winning note, teaming up with Alex Bullville ($5.20, 1:53.4) in the finale.

In the featured $25,000 Open Handicap Pace, Rockeyed Optimist ($3.00) lived up to odds-on billing, holding off a ferocious late rally from Dovuto Hanover for a 1:50.2 triumph.  The 5-year-old Rocknroll Hanover gelding floated into midfield from his outside post in the sextet, settling four lengths behind early pacesetter Real Nice (Anthony Napolitano) through a :27 first quarter before Andy McCarthy brushed Rockeyed Optimist to the fore up the backstretch.  Rockeyed Optimist’s lead was never in jeopardy until the final sixteenth, as 3-1 second choice Dovuto Hanover (Scott Zeron) surged off the cover of Take It Back Terry (Joe Bongiorno) to give chase.  Rockeyed Optimist had enough left to hold sway, prevailing by a diminishing half length.  Take It Back Terry, who flattened off the far turn, found more in the stretch, saving third.

Steve Elliott trains 17-time winner Rockeyed Optimist for Anthony Perretti, Virginia Berkner, the A and B Stable, and Joseph Battaglia.  For Rockeyed Optimist, it was his second win in three starts this season.

Total handle for the 13-race card was $3,015,013, marking an increase of $41,167 over the corresponding Saturday in 2015 and the tenth program in the last 11 at The Meadowlands with over $3 million in...

Happy Super Saturday IdaBet.com players – hope your weekend is off to a great start!  If you are thinking about playing the horses tonight…one way to start your wagering off is to take a look at Pompano’s card tonight.  Remember to Play Pompano on Wednesday, and earn up to $500 more on select tracks with our IdaMatch Wednesday Promotion!

David Miller and Tim Tetrick are looking forward to Saturday night (March 5) at Pompano Park.

Two of the leading participants in our sport will be in action at the South Florida track features the $75,000 Final of the Isle Casino Racing Pompano Park Late Closing Event for mares, a $30,000 Invitation Handicap for trotters and a $20,000 Open Handicap for pacers, among the stellar 10 race card.

In addition, Miller and Tetrick will serve as team captains as the Florida Amateur Driving Club features a pair of events benefitting, in Miller’s case, the Make-A-Wish Foundation and, Tetrick’s favorite, New Vocation.

As Miller related, “This is the perfect way to pass along our blessings to those who have not had the same fortunate experiences as we have enjoyed.

Tetrick added, “Dave and I have enjoyed a tremendous amount of success because of harness racing and this event put on by the Florida Amateur Driving Club gives us a chance to say ‘thank you’ for that success. Dein (F.A.D.C. President Dein Spriggs) spearheaded this event and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to participate.

Indeed, Spriggs’ Florida Amateur Driving Club has donated over $155,000 to worthy charitable causes since its inception with all members of the club donating their earnings from driving to the club for distribution.

The two race event, carded as the first and fourth on the Saturday program features Tetrick and Miller in both after having selected their respective teams during the Wednesday draw—but...

IdaBet Players Note: NANCY FROM NAIROBI ROCKETS HOME TO WIN $63,000 SANTA ANITA ALLOWANCE

Hey IdaBet players, we thought you would enjoy the following release from Santa Anita:

English-bred Nancy From Nairobi continued her stateside ascent with an emphatic 2 ½ length win in Friday’s $63,000 Santa Anita allowance feature under Abel Lezcano.  Owned by Hronis Racing, LLC and trained by John Sadler, the 5-year-old mare rallied three-wide turning for home en route to covering one mile on turf in 1:34.70.

With the temporary inner rail set at 30 feet, Nancy From Nairobi appeared to have a tall order in front of her when fifth in a field of seven older fillies and mares going into the far turn.

“This course has been speed favoring, so we were a little scared when we were back off the pace early,” said owner Kosta Hronis.  “She didn’t break well and we were last going into the first turn, but the jock played it smart and let her settle.  She finished really strong, especially with the rail at 30 feet.  I think John would like to run in the Santa Ana (Grade II, 1 1/8 miles on turf March 26) next.”

A winner of a second condition allowance in her third stateside start on Feb. 5, Nancy From Nairobi was the second choice in the betting at 2-1 and paid $6.60, $3.00 and $2.80.  With the winner’s share of $37,800, she increased her earnings to $151,456.  She now has four wins from 21 overall starts.

Ridden by Mike Smith, favored Glory sat second behind fractions of 23.20, 46.43, 1:10.62 and 1:22.67 before being inhaled by the winner approaching the sixteenth pole.  Off at 3-2, she finished 2 ¼ lengths in front of her stablemate Hijra and paid $3.00 and $2.80.

Off at 26-1 with Martin Garcia, Irish-bred Hijra paid $6.80 to show.

First post time for a nine-race card, which will be highlighted by the undefeated Eclipse Champion Songbird’s presence in the Grade III, $100,000 Santa Ysabel Stakes, is at 12:30 p.m.  Admission gates open at 10:30 a.m.
