(Feb. 27, 2016)—Third a quarter mile from home, Boozer wheeled three-wide at the top the stretch and was up to win Saturday’s $100,000 Sensational Star Stakes by a head under Gary Stevens.  Trained by Mark Glatt and owned by Al and Sandee Kirkwood, Boozer negotiated 6 ½ furlongs down Santa Anita’s hillside turf course in 1:13.03.

Breaking from post position 10 in a field of 11 older horses bred or sired in California, Boozer sat a comfortable trip early behind pacesetter and eventual runner-up Richard’s Boy and favored Forest Chatter.

Undefeated California-bred Smokey Image worked six furlongs Saturday morning under Victor Espinoza in a bullet 1:12.20 as he prepares to run against open company in the Grade II San Felipe Stakes on March 12.

The clocking was the fastest of 30 at the distance, the average time of which was 1:14.45. Smokey Image, a son of 2004 Santa Anita Handicap winner Southern Image, won the California Cup Derby at 1 1/16 miles by 8 ½ lengths on Jan. 30 in his first start for Gaines and his first at two turns.

Gaines was well satisfied with the drill by Smokey Image, as she was with Bolo’s five furlong workout on the main track in a minute flat.

Bolo, winner of the Grade II Arcadia Stakes a mile on grass Feb. 13, is being considered for either the Grade I Frank E. Kilroe Mile on turf or the Grade I, $1 million Santa Anita...
