HarnessTripNotes are designed to be used in conjunction with standard past performance data, to complement quantitative data points (such as
speed figures, sectional times, and chart calls) with qualitative expert video replay observations. Use these notes to determine if a horse had the benefit
We offer this glossary to aid your understanding of the symbols and abbreviated terms within the PDFs that contain the racing data. While we have some
key changes versus what you may see in a racing program, many elements of the product should be readily familiar to horseplayers. We also offer this

blind switch (abbr. “bld sw”) – a horse surrounded in front and to both sides by other contestants.
btn by pkt foe, btn off cvr – descriptions to account for the trip of a horse who defeated a tiring
carried (abbr. “carr”) – having to race deeper or wider due to the legal moves of another rival
clear (abbr. “clr”) – to cross down to the pegs at the front of the field, or to gain separation on the
cover (abbr. “covr”, “cvr”) – when racing at least two-wide, contestants can get behind a horse
which is “providing cover” and the leader is “first-over”, the horse behind is “second-over”, and
duck/ducked – a driver rapidly placing their horse behind another rival instead of electing to go on
faded – The least severe of three descriptions we use to explain loss of ground
float – a move at the start of a race to seek a closer early spot, but done so with less force than a
gradual (abbr. “grad”) – sustaining a bid over time, without any sudden bursts of speed
live – the physically visible appearance of reserved strength or an active advancement (i.e. “live
cover”)
locked in (abbr. “lock”) – trapped at the pegs by horses in the outer flow
loose – separated from rivals in front, but not regressing as to be “gapped”
mild – slightly better than even at any given point
open stretch (abbr. “opn str”) – the “passing lane”, the extra inner space in some home stretches.
pegs – the pylons or cones on the course.
pocket (abbr. “pkt”) – the position just behind the leader
retreat – to abort a leave attempt when room to duck or settle does not avail
shoved – angled deeper out due to interference
shuffled (abbr. “shuff”) – a horse being passed by advancing cover to the immediate right, usually
pushed back multiple positions unless able to get free
slid – a quick move amidst multiple surrounding actions, usually to take advantage of cover out
from tight quarters
split – to move between rivals
stalled – no longer advancing, more severe than “leveled off”
strg – strong
tailed off – lost ground severely
weakened – a much more sudden, pronounced loss of ground
whip taps – driver lightly urging horse with whip use
1o, 2o, etc. – first-over, second-over, etc.
2w, 3w, 4w, etc. – two-wide, three-wide, four-wide, etc.
2p, 3p, 4p, etc. – two-path, three-path, four-path, etc. NOTE: These indicate lateral position
without regard to number of horses actually between a given path and the pegs.
40y, 70y, 150y, etc. – distances from the finish measured in yards
1/16 through 9/16, 5/8, 3/4, 7/8, 1m – distances from the finish measured in fractional miles
5-1/2, 6-1/2, etc. – distances from the finish measured in furlongs (although uncommonly used in
harness racing parlance, HarnessTripNotes.com uses furlongs to maximize space in the lines)
“56.2, 28.2” or the like – hand-timed final 1/2- and 1/4-mile splits for races not at one mile
