Harlan Punch authoritative in Stymie; Divine Miss Grey wires her competition in Heavenly Prize

Harlan Punch authoritative in Stymie
Divine Miss Grey wires her competition in Heavenly Prize

Making his second start in less than a week, Harlan Punch received a perfect trip for owner and trainer David Jacobson under the services of leading winter meet rider Dylan Davis, besting a field of seven to win the $150,000 Stymie on Saturday at Aqueduct Racetrack.

Breaking alertly from post 2, Harlan Punch comfortably stalked in second position as Hit It Once More set fractions of 23.79 seconds for the opening quarter-mile, with the half in 47.52.

Harlan Punch made his winning move at the quarter-pole, moving three wide to overtake Hit It Once More and was set down in full gear at the top of the stretch. He extended away to comfortably secure the victory by seven lengths.

He completed the one-mile distance in a final time of 1:38.03.

“I just played off the break,” said Davis. “I saw Rafael [Hernandez] was very aggressive with Hit It Once More [No. 4], so I just let him do his own thing. Once I come to the outside, he just got into his own stride and he took it all for himself.”

Sent off as the 9-5 post-time favorite, the son of Harlan’s Holiday returned $5.90 for a $2 win wager. He earned his third consecutive victory, following a pair of allowance optional claiming wins on February 15 and March 4, respectively. The 5-year-old increased his career earnings to $571,993.

“I didn’t discuss [the race] with Dylan,” said Jacobson. “I left him no instructions, I told him to use your gut, and figure it out, and the way he’s riding right now, who’s going to tell him what to do? Definitely not me.”

Backsideofthemoon closed strongly to finish second followed by Hit It Once More, Watershed, Fellowship, Vulcan’s Forge and Securitiz.

One race later, Corms Racing Stable’s Divine Miss Grey picked up her third straight...

Yonkers Peek At Program For Saturday, March 10th

Some insights into tonight’s racing program for our IdaBet.com players:

1ST RACE – (4) SEVEN HOPES A may or may not work here (how is that for scintillating analysis)? Does get first legit shot third off bench to find that out.

2ND RACE – (1) MOONLITEONTHEBEACH was third to much better foe than what he’s up against here. Sees a slew of dressed-up rivals this time around.

5TH RACE – (1) BETTOREVER has made us look stoopid more than once in recent efforts. That said, wins draw and that gives him license to get half a trip.

7TH RACE – (7) ROCK N ROLL LEGACY is repeat ‘peek’ after getting a poor tow (from No. 4 here) week ago. Did show late pace and gonna be price now.

8TH RACE – (3) DO OVER HANOVER is sort of ‘have to’ gaze here, with both class dip and substantial post relief. Suspecting many suitors for him as well.

10TH RACE – (7) DON’TCALLMEFRANCIS was four-eyeballed in latest, first-up, put away odds-on number and third in blanket pix. Dips, but draw stinks.

12TH RACE – (1) RODEO ROCK moves in half-dozen notches after a useful local return. Made living as age-restricted sort season ago, works from finale pole.

——

$2 +/- (thru Tue., Mar. 6) – 52 wins ($495.40)

from 258 ($516) selex (-$20.60, hanging in without tariffs)

highest-priced winner – MACHTU N ($33.80)

lowest-priced winners – SOTO/POINT SOMEWHERELSE ($2.70 each)

2018 Dubai Racing Carnival -Saturday, March 10th

We are happy to offer our IdaBet players  the attached race cards for Super Saturday. After tomorrow’s meeting the next and final Carnival meeting is the 2018 Dubai World Cup, which takes place on Saturday 31st March.

 Meydan Selections:

Super Saturday effectively mirrors World Cup Night without the additional and considerable international challenge. It is in effect a test for locally trained horses, a test that asks whether they can run fast enough to be competitive or even win on World Cup night and this year there are plenty of live World Cup night contenders to consider on a fiercely competitive card. Analysis of the card is skewed by the presence of horses trained by Salem Bin Ghadayer. He has had a tremendous World Cup Carnival with five winners but now a doping violation weighs heavily over him. He is allowed to have runners as this breach is the subject of an appeal but what are we to make of those runners? This is tricky for any analyst, particularly as he seems to have a few good chances on the card. From my point of view I believe it best to take their form at face value and leave the implications of the recent doping violation to the Emirates Racing Authority.

With two winners last week we are now up to 17 at the World Cup Carnival. Here are four more selections for you.
