EFFINEX GALLOPS AS HE PREPARES FOR BIG ’CAP

East Coast invader Effinex, the probable favorite for Saturday’s $1 million Santa Anita Handicap presented by San Manuel Indian Bingo & Casino, was assigned highweight of 123 pounds for the Grade I classic at a mile and a quarter and is expected to have his first and only breeze over the track Tuesday or Wednesday, weather permitting.

“He galloped this morning,” said Kent Sweezey, assistant to Jimmy Jerkens, who trains the five-year-old Mineshaft horse for the Tri-Bone Stables. “He’ll probably work a half mile Tuesday or Wednesday. Being highweight is no surprise. We figured he would be.”

Effinex has not raced since winning the Grade I Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs on Nov. 27. He had been working at Palm Meadows in Florida before arriving at Santa Anita early Thursday evening.

The New York-bred horse was second to Triple Crown champion American Pharoah in the Breeders’ Cup Classic on Oct. 31 prior to his victory in the Clark. He has earned $2,112,950 thanks to a 7-2-3 record from 20 lifetime...

VELOCITY VESPA SETS TRACK RECORD IN POMPANO PARK LATE CLOSING FINAL

Velocity Vespa and George Napolitano, Jr. teamed up to score a track record 1:49 victory in the $75,000 Final of the Isle Casino Racing Pompano Park Late Closing Series on Saturday night (March 5).

Though that was a highlight on the “Super Saturday” program, the pair had to share with spotlight as the stars–both in the sky and on the track–were plentiful and shined brightly the entire night.

Here is a recap of the festivities:

$75,000 Isle Casino Racing Pompano Park Late Closing Final

The aforementioned Velocity Vespa appeared to push the Hummer Starting Gate out of the way at the start and blasted her way through fractions of :26.1, :54 and 1:21 before sprinting home in :28 to score a victory measuring just short of a length in 1:49, the fastest of any distaffer in the 52 year history of the track.

The six year-old daughter of I Scoot Hanover, trained by Chris Oakes for owner Susan Oakes, off as the 3 to 5 public choice, pinned the defeat on Show Runner, driven by Tim Tetrick, with Pertty Music, handled by Kevin Wallis, third, almost seven lengths away. LUcy’s Pearl finished fourth while Godiva Seelster, hampered by the outside nine post, rallied from last half way through the mile to finish fifth and extend her streak of races earning purse checks to 77 covering her seasons as a three, four, five and, now, six year-old seasons.
