VELOCITY VESPA SETS TRACK RECORD IN POMPANO PARK LATE CLOSING FINAL

Velocity Vespa and George Napolitano, Jr. teamed up to score a track record 1:49 victory in the $75,000 Final of the Isle Casino Racing Pompano Park Late Closing Series on Saturday night (March 5).

Though that was a highlight on the “Super Saturday” program, the pair had to share with spotlight as the stars–both in the sky and on the track–were plentiful and shined brightly the entire night.

Here is a recap of the festivities:

$75,000 Isle Casino Racing Pompano Park Late Closing Final

The aforementioned Velocity Vespa appeared to push the Hummer Starting Gate out of the way at the start and blasted her way through fractions of :26.1, :54 and 1:21 before sprinting home in :28 to score a victory measuring just short of a length in 1:49, the fastest of any distaffer in the 52 year history of the track.

The six year-old daughter of I Scoot Hanover, trained by Chris Oakes for owner Susan Oakes, off as the 3 to 5 public choice, pinned the defeat on Show Runner, driven by Tim Tetrick, with Pertty Music, handled by Kevin Wallis, third, almost seven lengths away. LUcy’s Pearl finished fourth while Godiva Seelster, hampered by the outside nine post, rallied from last half way through the mile to finish fifth and extend her streak of races earning purse checks to 77 covering her seasons as a three, four, five and, now, six year-old seasons.

Turfway Park – Sunday, March 6th

Please note that, because of possible late changes, numbers shown here may NOT correspond with program numbers. When wagering, always use the horse’s number listed in your official track program.

Race 1

NASDROVIA was third at this same level last time out in her first start back since early December. She should move forward off of that one and is the choice to pick up the maiden win here. VERN’S MOCHA ROSE takes a big drop in class after a few dull efforts and looks like a contender. GRANNY PANTS drops in class in her second career start and is a threat

Race 2

MAX’S DEFENCE moves back around two turns and could be a threat against a wide-open field at decent odds. CITIZEN JOHN shows a few solid efforts in his last couple of starts over the surface. EXCITING BAND has five wins over the track here at Turfway.

Race 3

GILLEY was disqualified from winning her second in a row in her last start after causing some trouble in that one. A cleaner trip should make her a winner today. HOPE TO SHINE has been second in two of her last three and looks like the one to beat on the move back down in class. ANNIE’S ON TOUR drops in class and looks capable of running well here.

Race 4

COOL MOVES looked sharp breaking her maiden here at Turfway back in early January after having been off since June. Any improvement off of that effort would make her tough to handle today. BOTTLE...

IdaBet Players Note: EFFINEX GETS TOP WEIGHT OF 123 POUNDS FOR GRADE I, $1 MILLION SANTA ANITA HANDICAP

We thought our Idabet.com players would want to know that Trainer Jimmy Jerkens’ highly accomplished Effinex has been assigned high weight of 123 pounds for the 79th running of the Grade I, $1 million Santa Anita Handicap,  to be contested at a mile and a quarter next Saturday, March 12.

Runner-up to Triple Crown Champion American Pharoah in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic Oct. 31, Effinex, a 5-year-old New York-bred horse by Mineshaft, was a three quarter length winner of his most recent start, the Grade I, 1 1/8 miles Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs Nov. 27.  Effinex is owned by Tri-Bone Stables.

North America’s longest continuously run “hundred grander,” the Big ’Cap, for 4-year-olds and up, was first run on Feb. 23, 1935, and was won by Azucar, who was ridden by the legendary George “The Iceman” Woolf.

Won last year by trainer Jerry Hollendorfer’s Shared Belief, the Santa Anita Handicap has been won by some of the greatest horses in racing history, including; Seabiscuit (1940), Noor (1950), Round Table (1958), Hill Rise (1965), Lucky Debonair (1966), Ack Ack (1971), Cougar II (1973), Affirmed (1979), Spectacular Bid (1980), John Henry (1981 & 82), Alysheba (1988) and Tiznow (2001).

Won a record 11 times by jockey Bill Shoemaker, the all-time leading Big ’Cap trainer is Charlie Whittingham, as the Bald Eagle saddled nine winners, four more than Bob Baffert.
