Turfway Park by Bret Battaglia’s Picks: Sunday, Feb. 28

Race 1

SECRET DIARY drops in class after a nice win last time out and will be tough to beat here. TIA CHUY also takes a big drop in class and could be dangerous here. GIVEMHAYLEGAYLE just missed at this same level two starts back and looks like a contender.

Race 2

NASDROVIA was third at this same level last time out in her first start back since early December. She should move forward off of that one. Give her the slight edge to pick up the maiden win here. DREAM BROTHER has been second as the favorite in each of her last three starts. She figures to be a short price again tonight, but is definitely the one to beat. ROBERTS ROGUE finished just behind the favorite in her last start and is a threat.

Race 3

GRACE’S DEVIL looked sharp drawing off to win by five last time out. A repeat of that effort would make him tough to beat again today. LOGAN CREEK shows a win and a second in his last two starts at this level and looks like the main competition. GRAND KUMA moves back around two turns after three second place finishes in a row around one turn.

Race 4

SALTY RIM didn’t fire...

GUNS LOADED FIRES ON EIGHT DAYS REST TO WIN $75,000 JOE HERNANDEZ STAKES

BY 2 ¼ LENGTHS UNDER GONZALEZ; O’NEILL TRAINEE GETS 6 ½ FURLONGS DOWN HILLSIDE TURF IN 1:12.60

An allowance winner on dirt just eight days ago, the Doug O’Neill-conditioned Guns Loaded transitioned back to the turf in fine fashion on Sunday, as he took Santa Anita’s featured $75,000 Joe Hernandez Stakes by 2 ¼ lengths.  Ridden by Santiago Gonzalez, Guns Loaded negotiated 6 ½ furlongs down the Camino Real Turf Course in 1:12.60.

“All the credit goes to Doug,” said part-owner and O’Neill assistant, Steve Rothblum.  “If you’re a numbers player, on the Ragozin Sheets, if you run them back off a good race, within nine days, they run great.  If you wait longer, they don’t.  It’s either run them back quick or run them back after 30 days. “We lost this horse for 32 (thousand, dollars) at Del Mar (Nov. 5) and when we took him back in December (6, at Los Alamitos), Pete Miller did us a favor, ‘cause he...

Dips a bit! 8-TERANADAWN…will be on the bullet train when gate opens. Initial quarter took something out of him in last. In easier. 4-SOUTHERN WINDS…gets some class relief here, drew well and can catch live cover to “make” the ticket. 11 for 47 life.

RACE TWO 6-BLUERIDGE DANCER…made sharp double bubble move 3/8s out in last & dented quick 3d panel. Can turn it on late. 4-ZAVAN…not much on paper these days but takes yet another dip in class and should be a lot tighter. Should be a price! 2-UNION MAN HANOVER…hadn’t drawn a good post in a month and now gets class relief to go along with it. Better spot.
