Thievery pulled a minor upset in the $75,000 Two Altazano Stakes and Bravura was much the best in the$75,000 Jim’s Orbit Stakes.

Last month Victoria Ashford’s homebred Bravura was a convincing winner in the   $50,000 Groovy Stakes. He was heavily favored for tonight’s $75,000 Jim’s Orbit and did not disappoint.  Jockey C. J. McMahon, guided the chestnut colt from his far outside post to the lead and won the six-furlong stakes in 1:10.59, one of the quickest times of the 2016 Sam Houston Race Park meet.

“We expected a great race and he delivered,” said Calhoun. “I was glad to see him get away so quickly. This colt’s very sharp and. C. J. fits him very well.”

“He walked into the gate and stood perfectly,” said McMahon. “He left there on his “A” game. When the other horse ran to us, I squeezed and he ran on. He never ceases to amaze me.”

Ashford was extremely proud of her Early Flyer colt.

“I’ve bred horses for 25 years and this was my first Texas Stallion Stakes,” said Ashford. “It means...

Paulina’s Love

Consistent Paulina’s Love registered her first stakes win in Saturday’s Grade II, $200,000 Buena Vista Stakes at Santa Anita as she held off the late charge of  Stormy Lucy to prevail by a neck under Gary Stevens while covering a flat mile on turf in 1:36.06.

A comfortable second to longshot Moanin going to the far turn, Paulina’s Love, with Theatre Star to her outside, took command five sixteenths from home and was all-out to hold off the late charge of Stormy Lucy, a Grade I winner.

Trained by Richard Baltas, Paulina’s Love, a Louisiana-bred daughter of Mizzen Mast, was the third choice in a field of 11 older fillies and mares at 7-2 and paid $9.60, $4.80 and $3.80.

“I’ve fallen in love with her,” said Stevens, who is now three for five with “Pauline” in the afternoon.  “These (owners) have been so patient with her and have allowed Richard to do what he wants with her.  She just keeps developing and getting better and better.  She exploded at the eighth pole just like the last time…

“I rode her with a lot of confidence, like she was the favorite.  She minds, she lets me do what I want, whatever the pace scenario is.  When she’s done, I’d like to take her home and put her in my...

Turfway Park Bret Battaglia Picks Feb 21st

Race 1

QUEEN OF SPRING has been off since New Year’s Day when she won on the move back down to this bottom level, give her a slight edge against a wide-open field. MISS OMEARA is inconsistent, but won against tougher two starts back and looks dangerous here on the drop in class. DUCHESS WHITNEY has won two in a row coming into this one and would be no surprise here.

Race 2

AS YOU KNOW drops in class after a dull effort last time out and looks like he’s in a good spot to pick up the win today. GOOD NIGHT BID comes in off a maiden win here at Turfway and is a contender. DEVADUTT also comes in off a maiden win over the track and has a chance.

Race 3

CALHOUN has been running well since moving to Turfway with two wins and a second from his last three starts. He has the speed to be in contention throughout, give him the edge against a well-matched field. FAVORITE COACH shows two solid efforts in his last two starts over the track and looks like the one to beat. TOSTON just missed last time out and definitely looks capable of running well again today.

Race 4

DO I DO ran third back in December in his only start since September. He has two wins over the track in the past and is the choice for the win here. GRAND COULEE shows two solid efforts at this same level in his last two starts. NIMBLE TIGER has been third in each of his last two starts and has to be considered.

Race 5

PRINCESS PRINCESS come if off a nice second place finish on the grass at Tampa and looked very sharp breaking her maiden at long odds at Keeneland before...
