Turfway Park – Saturday, Feb 6th

Race 1

SECRET DAIRY didn’t fire on the dirt at Gulfstream last time out, but showed some decent form on the grass before that one and shouldn’t mind the switch in surfaces tonight. Give her a slight edge here. GYPSY ANGEL ROW moves up in class after being claimed in her last start when she drew off to break her maiden by six. WICKED VICKY drops in for a tag for the first time tonight.

Race 2

WHATTHECATDRUGIN hasn’t shown much in his last two starts over the track. He drops in class tonight and looks like he’s in a good spot to pick up the win here. I’M STAR STRUCK drops in class in his first start back since September. He shows some nice works over the track leading up to his return and could be dangerous here. STRONG RESOLVE has a chance.

Race 3

LOOKING FOR A DATE has been off since mid-December when he disappointed on the dirt at Hawthorne. He’s done his best racing over the turf and synthetics and should move forward on the move back to the Polytrack. AFTERMARKETSPOILER didn’t show much on the dirt at Gulfstream in his last start, but drops in class and could be tough to beat here if he takes to the Polytrack. MISS CATWOOD has been in the money in three of his last four starts and is a threat.

Race 4

GRAND COULEE ran a nice third last time out in his first start since June. He should move forward off of that one, give him a slight edge here. DRIFTING WIND has been beaten as the favorite in each of his last two starts over the track and looks like the one to beat again tonight. STROKE has outrun his odds in each of his last two starts and looks...

Rockeyed Optimist makes 2016 debut Saturday at Big M
by James Witherite, Meadowlands Media Relations
East Rutherford, N.J. — After a well-deserved layoff stretching the fall and half of the winter, 15-time winner Rockeyed Optimist is ready to return to the races with two sharp qualifiers under his harness.  The 5-year-old Rocknroll Hanover gelding has been installed the 2-1 morning line favorite in Saturday (February 6) evening’s featured eighth race at The Meadowlands.
As a 4-year-old, Rockeyed Optimist won nine of 15 races, including the $59,000 Sonsam final and the $59,000 Clyde Hirt final as well as two Graduate Series preliminaries.  His mark of 1:48 came in his Graduate preliminary at the Meadowlands last June.  Regular driver Tim Tetrick is reunited with the Steve Elliott trainee, and they will begin from post 5 in the field of eight.  Among the others to square off in the $17,000 upper-level conditioned event are Scott Blackler trainee Real Nice (post 8, Scott Zeron), a winner in three straight, including a 1:49.4 triumph at this level last week, Class Six (post 4, Joe Bongiorno), who seeks a fifth straight win after reeling off four straight at...

IRISH-BRED MIRAGE TAKES $58,000 SANTA ANITA ALLOWANCE FEATURE BY A NECK UNDER PRAT;

CALLAGHAN TRAINEE GETS MILE ON TURF IN 1:35.87

Irish-Bred Mirage

ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 5, 2016)—Unhurried early, Irish-bred Mirage saved ground throughout and rallied determinedly under Flavien Prat to take Friday’s $58,000 Santa Anita allowance feature by a neck.  Trained by Simon Callaghan, she covered a flat mile on turf in 1:35.87.

Breaking from the nine post in a field of ten 3-year-old fillies, Mirage, who added blinkers today for the first time in her sixth career start, folded over cleverly while next to last going into the Club House turn and wheeled three-wide when called upon turning for home.

“Today worked out perfect,” said Callaghan.  “They went quick and we had planned to take her back and save ground.  Flavien rode her perfectly and I think a mile is perfect for her.  I don’t think we’d want to go much further.  I added the blinkers to help her focus really, nothing more than that.”

The second choice in the wagering at 4-1, she paid $10.60, $6.20 and $3.40.            .

Owned by Mrs. Fitriani Hay, Mirage notched her first stateside win and improved her overall mark to 6-2-1-0.  With the winner’s share of $34,800, she increased her earnings to...
