Dubai Update For March 3rd

Meydan’s ‘Super Saturday’ has a warm-up meeting this year, with Thursday night staging a full Carnival card for the first time, including four pattern races.

We know there’s no such thing as a certainty in racing, but Doug Watson’s Polar River [Meydan, 16.10] seems as close a one as possible in the UAE Oaks, in which she faces a paltry pair of rivals. She continues to “do everything right,” at home according to her trainer and defeat is almost unthinkable, with chief rival Vale Dori having to concede weight, after a belated start to the season.

If Polar River wins this, she will go onto the UAE Derby, a race that Watson knows “will be a lot tougher.” Tentative plans are then in place for a tilt at the Kentucky Oaks.

“It would be great for the owners to go, and great for the team here,” says Watson of a potential Churchill Downs trip. “But we have a long way to go. It is likely that she will race in America at some stage though, if not the Kentucky Oaks, then something later on, but let’s take it one race at a time.”

The card’s other three-year-old race, the Listed Meydan Classic on turf, is stronger, and while Simon Crisford’s Group 3 winner First Selection will attract plenty of attention, he’s been rerouted here after an aborted dirt campaign which is off-putting. Therefore, preference is for the Godolphin filly Pure Diamond [Meydan, 15.35], who surely would have won the trial for this with a clear run last time,...

Race 2: 3- Dry Ice – Was a winner last time out and could strike again tonight. 4- Most Happy Dragon – Finished second two starts in a row and could post a similar effort again tonight. 1- Keystone Rideau – Could be tough from the rail. 5- Regil Tiger – Should not be overlooked as a solid competitor in here.

Race 3: 7- A Crown For Lindy – Won two of his last three races and could be the winner again tonight. 1- Carbon Footprint – Could be tough from the rail. 3- Client Nine – Could add value to the ticket.

Race 4: 1- Crank It Up – Draws the rail and could be victorious upon returning to Northfield. 3- Bold Decision – Draws much better and could be a tough customer in here. 6- Our Mclovin – One of several in here that could make the ticket. 9- Perspective – Has as good of a shot as any in here to complete the Superfecta.

Race 5: 4- Natural Forces – Drops in class and could be successful at this level of competition. 1- It Really Matters – Also drops in class; this one could be tough from the rail. 2- Aren’t I Hanover – Draws better tonight and looks to be able to make the ticket. 5- Team Zordin – Looks to be in the thick of the action.

HAMBURG, N.Y. — Wicked Elphaba used a ‘wicked’ brush at the three-quarter marker and bolted away from the field in the $10,000 Open Pace for the filly and mares at Buffalo Raceway on Wednesday night (March 2).
For the second straight race, Wicked Elphaba rewarded her supporters with a big win price. She returned $42.60 for the upset win this week after notching a $31.40 score in her previous start seven days earlier against softer company.
Sitting fifth at the half-mile pole, Wicked Elphaba (Ray Fisher Jr.) shook free down the backstretch and zipped past the pace-setting Ugly Betty. It was all over at the top of the stretch as Wicked Elphaba opened it up in the lane, using a 27.4 final panel to leave the other seven ladies in her wake. She finished the mile in 1:58.3 over the good track and was 5-3/4 lengths ahead of her nearest rival.
The only battle left in the feature was for the minor rewards and Kesons Silhouette (Truman Gale) skimmed the pylons for second with Little Santamonica (Shawn McDonough) taking third place.
The victory was the second in six appearances this season for Wicked Elphaba (Western Terror-Melajusted). She is owned by theTanah Merah Farms LLC and is trained by Ryan Swift. The 6-year-old mare has now...

NEW BERMUDA TURF COURSE – Santa Anita

Santa Anita Park has announced it will begin installation of a completely new Bermuda turf course on June 20, which will be ready for use in advance of Santa Anita’s Autumn Meet which begins in late September.

“With the impact of additional racing dates and increased demand for turf racing, the replacement of the course is something we have been anticipating and planning for several months,” said Joe Morris, Senior Vice President, West Coast Operations for The Stronach Group.  “The new course will be very tight-knit and uniform, and we’re confident that we can have it fully installed by early July, which will give it the time it needs during optimum growing conditions.

“Turf racing is extremely popular with our fans and horsemen, and with our expanded racing calendar, we are placing demands on this course that have never before existed.  The new turf is designed to be robust enough to handle the additional use.  The horsemen are fully supportive of this project, and together, we look forward to its implementation.”

Trainer Jim Cassidy, President of the California Thoroughbred Trainers (CTT), said the following:  “A completely new and durable turf course is essential to successful year ’round racing at Santa Anita.  Track leadership has been careful to consider our suggestions and we are pleased to endorse their plan.”

Beginning June 6, preparations will begin on the hillside portion of the course, with the turf oval scheduled for closure beginning June 20.  The first course of action will be to remove the existing turf and prepare the soil for the installation of the fully mature Bermuda, which has been grown in La Quinta, Calif.

With an oval that measures about seven furlongs, Santa Anita’s Camino Real Turf Course is unlike any other in North America, in that it features a hillside component, which measures about 6 ½ furlongs (4,777 feet) from the top of the...
