TWO-DAY PICK SIX CARRYOVER INTO SATURDAY AT SANTA ANITA OF $176,971;

TOTAL PICK SIX POOL SHOULD APPROACH $1 MILLION

ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 29, 2016)—There is a two-day Pick Six carryover into Saturday, Sunshine Millions Day, at Santa Anita of $176,971, and Saturday’s total Pick Six pool should approach $1 million.

With a carryover from Thursday of $32,552, there was $270,330 in “new money” wagered on Friday, creating a total Pick Six pool today of $302,882.

Friday’s nightcap, which had a field of nine maiden three year olds running 5 ½ furlongs, was taken by 8-1 longshot Gathering Evidence.  A first time starter trained by Doug O’Neill and ridden by Flavien Prat, Gathering Evidence was one of only three “carryover eligible” horses, and paid $18.60 to win.

Saturday is Sunshine Millions/California Cup Day at Santa Anita and the track will present a 10-race program, with the Pick Six covering races five through 10.  With five state-bred stakes offering a total of $1 million in purses Saturday, the Pick Six will begin with the $250,000 California Cup Derby, which is headed up by the undefeated 4-5 morning line favorite, Smokey Image.

SANTA ANITA FRIDAY PICK SIX POOL TOTALS $302,882 ON HEELS OF $32,552 CARRYOVER FROM THURSDAY

                 ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 29, 2016)—With a modest carryover stoking the Pick Six fires, fans wagered $270,330 in “new money” Friday, creating a total Pick Six pool of $302,882 by third race post time.

A Pick Six carryover of $32,552 on Thursday spurred the pari-mutuel activity and Friday’s Pick Six began with a minor upset, as 8-5 second choice Hill Four Eleven went gate to wire going seven furlongs, winning in-hand by 3 ½ lengths.  Ridden by Fernando Perez, he was off at 8-5 and paid $5.40 to win.

Even money favorite Edzactly, who was ridden by apprentice David Lopez, finished second and paid $2.80 and $2.20.

Friday’s Pick Six will conclude with race eight, which is scheduled to be run at approximately 4:33 p.m. PST.

VELOCITY VESPA EXTENDS STREAK TO FIVE AT POMPANO

Pompano Beach, FL.January 27, 2016.Velocity Vespa survived a “roughed up” opening quarter and went on to win the $12,000 Mares Open Handicap Pace in 1:53 over a sloppy Pompano Park oval on Wednesday night.

The six year-old daughter of I Scoot Hanover, driven by George Napolitano, Jr., dug in late to hold off the pocket sitting Mach It A Par, handled by Dan Clements, by a neck with Classic Carpet and Wally Hennessey teaming up for show honors.

Just A Bee finished fourth after moving to the flank of Velocity Vespa around the final turn while Art Frenzy picked up the minor award in the field of seven.

At the outset, Mach It A Par showed alacrity leaving with Just A Bee alongside and Velocity Vespa also joining the fray from her outside post and “double bubbled” through much of a sizzling opening quarter in :26.3.

Finally making the top, Napolitano lulled the rest of the field through a :30.2 second panel-a breather that put Velocity Vespa at the half in :57.

On the backside, Just A Bee left her spot in third and charged up strongly as the pace quickened with “Vespa” reaching the third station in 1:25.

In the lane, Just A Bee drifted out a bit allowing Mach It a Par a clear path to the leader and, while gaining a bit late, fell a neck short at the wire as Velocity Vespa notched the victory-her fifth straight here at...
