Dovuto Hanover debuts Saturday at Big M
East Rutherford, N.J. — Following nearly nine months on the sidelines, Martin Scharf’s Dovuto Hanover prepared to commence his 6-year-old season with a pair of qualifiers earlier in the month. In Saturday (February 27) evening’s featured $20,000 ninth race at The Meadowlands, he will tackle nine others on debut for trainer Richard “Nifty” Norman.
“He had some issues last year, only having six starts, but he’s been so far, so good,” said Norman of his new acquisition. “I’m pretty happy with him so far.”
While installed the 3-1 morning line favorite, a tall task awaits the gelded son of Dragon Again. Among those facing Dovuto Hanover are Erv Miller trainee Jet Airway (Marcus Miller, post 7), who rises off a decisive 1:50 win, the stout closer Ashley’s Husband (post 4) who reunites with Tim Tetrick after a ferocious :25.4 closing quarter propelled him to victory two starts back, and Aslan (Andy McCarthy, post 9), who charged off cover on local debut last week after solid bids in top-level fields at Yonkers.
Scott Zeron will handle the driving duties aboard Dovuto Hanover, who took his mark of 1:48.4 at The Meadowlands as a 3-year-old. Fillies and mares will star in the $50,000 Jersey Lilly Stakes and a solid group of classy turf sprinters will compete in the $50,000 Bucharest Turf Sprint. The $50,000 Texas Heritage Stakes for 3-year-olds will also be run on the Connally Turf Course for the first time.

As America’s first Triple Crown Champion jockey in 37 years, Victor Espinoza helped Thoroughbred racing project a positive image far beyond the confines of the Thoroughbred industry throughout 2015, thus elevating the sport’s exposure and acceptance to a level perhaps not seen since the 1970s. Accordingly, Espinoza, a 43-year-old native of Mexico City, has been selected by a vote of jockeys nationwide as the winner of Santa Anita’s highly coveted 2016 George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award.
“It’s quite an honor for any rider to be selected by his peers as the winner of such a prestigious award,” said Terry Meyocks, National Manager of the Jockeys’ Guild. “And I would like to congratulate Victor on this great achievement.”
In addition to numerous national television appearances through the 2015 Triple Crown and last fall’s Breeders’ Cup World Championships, Espinoza also remained tireless in his efforts on behalf of cancer-stricken youth, donating 10 percent of his winnings to support pediatric cancer research at City of Hope, in nearby Duarte.
With the Bob Baffert-trained American Pharoah providing the horsepower, Espinoza gleefully proclaimed himself “The luckiest Mexican on earth,” on national television following their win in the Belmont Stakes June 6.
