HAMBURG, N.Y. — Kahoku made it a perfect 2-for-2 over the Buffalo Raceway half-mile oval on Friday evening (Feb. 26) by going gate-to-wire to effortlessly beat Justgottogetthere by 2-3/4 lengths in the featured $8,200 trot.
In his debut at Buffalo Raceway on February 19, Kahoku (Truman Gale) cruised to a two-length decision in 2:01.3 over a sloppy track. Now stepping up a notch, he had no issues once again in trotting away from his seven rivals by rolling to a 2:00.1 decision on the fast track.
Kahoku, who was racing at Northfield Park, had no trouble in setting the tempo from the pylons. He set steady fractions of 30.0, 1:00.1 and 1:30.0 and faced no opposition in the drive to the wire. It was a battle for the minor spoils with Justgottogetthere (Jim McNeight) rallying for second and Strong Hope (Jack Flanigen) taking third.
Trained by Mark Laidlaw and co-owned by Colleen Girdlestone and Michael Gentner, Kahoku (SJ’s Caviar-Tags Goal) is an 8-year-old gelding that now has put $10,760 in the bank this season and $137,822 lifetime.
Gale celebrated his birthday with a pair of victories while Flanigen and Ronnie Wrenn Jr. doubled. Maria Rice had two training victories.
The best card of the season is on tap for Saturday night at Buffalo Raceway beginning at 6 p.m. There’s $116,500 in purse money up for grabs with...

Gural Hanover victorious on debut in Big M trotting feature

East Rutherford, N.J. — Stakes-placed Gural Hanover ($2.80, part of entry) made his return to the races a triumphant one in the $25,000 Open Handicap Trot, and all-sources handle topped $3 million for the eighth consecutive card on Friday (February 26) evening at The Meadowlands.
Having drawn the outside post in the field of eight, Gural Hanover took no part in the early pace, retreating to seventh as last week’s Open winner Crosbys Clam Bake (Scott Zeron) sprinted to a :27.2 initial quarter before ceding the lead to Can Do (Anthony Napolitano).  Midway on the backstretch, Yannick Gingras floated the 5-year-old Crazed gelding off the pegs, latching onto the live cover of B Yoyo (Joe Bongiorno) through a :55.2 half and slipstreaming a pressured third quarter before swinging three-wide off a stalled B Yoyo a quarter from home.  Gural Hanover kicked clear in upper stretch as the pacesetters faded, holding sway in the end by a driven half-length in 1:54.4 over entrymates Bourbon Bay (Corey Callahan), who charged willingly down the grandstand side after being shuffled to last, and Opulent Yankee (Andy Miller), who negotiated traffic to stay on.
Ron Burke trains Gural Hanover for the Burke Racing Stable, Weaver Bruscemi, Little E, LLC, and the Panhellenic Stable.
Burke and Gingras teamed up as well in the sub-featured $15,500 upper-level trot, as Its Huw You Know turned in a 19-1 upset in 1:54.2, kicking third-over cover to pass even-money...

D’AMATO’S IRISH-BRED HUNT COULD BE ‘NOW’ HORSE

IN SUNDAY’S $75,000 JOE HERNANDEZ STAKES

AT 6 ½ FURLONGS DOWN HILLSIDE TURF

ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 25, 2016)—Trainer Phil D’Amato’s Irish-bred Hunt, a sharp first condition allowance winner on Feb. 4, will hope to parlay his recent good form over the course into victory in Sunday’s $75,000 Joe Hernandez Stakes for older horses at 6 ½ furlongs down Santa Anita’s hillside turf course.  Named in honor of the original Voice of Santa Anita, the Hernandez attracted a wide-open field of seven.

Ridden for the first time by Flavien Prat, Hunt was attentive to the pace as the 5-2 favorite on Feb. 4, opened up by two lengths crossing the dirt at the top of the lane and prevailed by three quarters of a length in his hillside debut.  A 4-year-old gelding, Hunt is owned by Michael House and is 12-2-5-1 overall with earnings of $91,109.

A close second going a mile on turf in his U.S. debut at Del Mar Aug. 30, Hunt will be making his sixth stateside start on Sunday and will be ridden back by Prat.

A winner of the Grade III Eddie D. Stakes over the course in September, 2014, Tarabilla Farms’ Home Run Kitten never threatened here in the downhill Clockers’ Corner Stakes Jan. 24, but had been idle...

  • SANTA ANITA HONORS LEGENDARY JOE HERNANDEZ

MORE SPIRIT NEEDED FROM MOR SPIRIT FOR SAN FELIPE

Mor Spirit

Mor Spirit, who was eased in a workout on Tuesday, remains a candidate for the San Felipe Stakes on March 12 pending his next workout, Bob Baffert said Thursday morning.

“I think I’m going to breeze him now on Sunday, and I’ll know more,” the trainer said of the Robert B. Lewis Stakes winner, his leading Triple Crown contender.

“We over-thought it a little bit,” Baffert said, speaking of the aborted drill. “Sometimes I work him with earplugs and sometimes I don’t. I don’t want him to do that much. He has them on when he leaves the paddock, then we take them out before he goes to the gate. It keeps him calm.

“He just lost interest (Tuesday); he’ll do that, but he’s all right.”

The San Felipe is a Grade II race at 1 1/16 miles with a $400,000...

IdaBet.com Players Note: ALERT BAY HEADS COMPETITIVE FIELD OF 11 – Santa Anita

Five-year-old gelding Alert Bay heads a field of 11 in Saturday’s $100,000 Sensational Star Stakes for California-bred or sired older horses going 6 ½ furlongs down Santa Anita’s hillside turf course.

Easily the most successful in the Sensational Star by earnings alone with over a $1,000,000 to his credit, Alert Bay, trained by Blaine Wright will be seeking his first win down the hill. Dominant over Santa Anita’s turf course in recent years, Alert Bay has run in the money in six out of seven lifetime tries over the grass here in Arcadia, with four wins.

A winner of the Grade II City of Hope (turf) Mile on Sept. 27, 2015 at Santa Anita, ‘AB’ went on to run seventh in the Grade II Seabiscuit Handicap in late November over Del Mar’s turf course after winning up north in the Bay Area at odds of 1-5 in a turf allowance. He then went on to run sixth in his first-ever try down the hillside in the Grade II Daytona on Dec. 26, though beaten only a length.

Alert Bay’s latest try over the turf, when favored at 2-1, resulted in a second to What a View in the Cal Cup Turf Classic at Santa Anita Jan. 30 going 1 1/8 miles. With two bullet works serving as his most recent over Golden Gate’s Tapeta surface up at his home base in Berkeley, CA, Alert Bay looks ready to fire.

“He does quite well at Santa Anita, he really likes this place,” said Wright following his win in the City of Hope....
