Wow – with green beers and an abundance of Jameson Irish Whiskey at the ready, Harris Farms’ homebred Velvet Mesquite heads a field of five California-bred or sired fillies and mares set to compete in Saturday’s $100,000 Irish O’Brien Stakes at 6 ½ furlongs down Santa Anita’s hillside turf course.

VELVET MESQUITE:  Trained by Blake Heap, this 6-year-old mare comes off of one of the most impressive efforts of her career, a better than looked 1 ¾ length win versus state-breds in the Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf Sprint on Jan. 30—her sixth win from 12 tries down Santa Anita’s unique hillside layout.  Ridden confidently by Kent Desormeaux, Velvet Mesquite appears primed for another top performance in what will be her 20^th career start.  With all six of her wins coming down the hill, she has career earnings of $433,446.

QIAONA:  Owned by Curt and Lila Lanning, this 6-year-old mare rallied from off the pace to finish a  sharp second to Velvet Mesquite in the Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf Sprint here on Jan. 30 and thus, rates second billing in the Irish O’Brien.  Trained by Ed Moger, Qiaona rallied to be a close second in this race a year ago and is 6-1-2-1 lifetime down the hillside turf.  With seven wins from 32 overall starts, Qiaona has lifetime earnings of $615,643.

RACE ONE DOUBLE- 1-5, 4-5 PICK-5- 1,4 w 5 w 3,4 w 1 w 3,4 1-POINTE OF INQUIRY…has strong brushing power. Dips in class and has rail so should be closer. 4-ZORAZE…recent form extreme;y sharp. Performed well in higher class. Gets in on NW8 clause. 5-POLITICAL FOE…always seems to try hard. Showed strong trot on backside in last. On ticket.

RACE TWO 5-MACHMEMACKIE…gave nice performance in 2016 debut showing gate speed & strong close. 6-ROADDOG JESS JAMES…not much on paper but liked double-bubble move 5/16s out. Rocks late. 7-Y S JOE…been solid in class last few starts. Will pick up live cover on the backside. Compares!

RACE THREE 4-MY REVENUER…won a couple of Open 1’s few weeks ago and finally gets some class relief. Cover flow trip. 3-WINDING HILL…went up in the air leaving in last. Has explosive brushing power when given room to roam. 5-SHE’S ALL IN…tough mare will be on the engine from coveted post 5. Been on the board against Open 1’s.
