IdaBet Players WOW – TWO-DAY SANTA ANITA PICK SIX CARRYOVER FUELS MASSIVE TOTAL POOL OF $2.6 MILLION ON THURSDAY AT SANTA ANITA

With a two-day Pick Six carryover from Sunday of $548,670 providing the pari-mutuel impetus, $2,115,962 in “new money” was wagered Thursday, creating a massive total Pick Six pool at Santa Anita of $2,664,632 by third race post time.

On a day when “form” for the most part, held, there were 304 winning tickets, each worth $5,537.40.  There were 8,876 consolation tickets with five winners, each paying $54.40.

Contested on races three through eight, second choice Foxy Fresh, off at 9-5, paid $5.60 to win the third.  Favored Algorhythmic, off at 9-5, was up to win the fourth race by a nose and paid $5.60 to win.  Longshot Awesome Luck, off at 14-1, took race five and paid $30.20.  Race six went to 3-5 favorite Shiny Nugget, who paid $3.20 to win.

Thursday’s seventh race went to another favorite, Big Move, who was off at 7-5 and paid $4.80 to win.  The eighth and final race went to favored Surfing the Menu, who was off at 2-1 and paid $6.40 to win.

IdaBet Players Note: TOEWS ON ICE HEADS SUNDAY’S $75,000 SAN PEDRO STAKES

In an ongoing effort to keep our IdaBet.com players in the know with all things racing…we thought you would want to know that graded stakes winning Toews On Ice heads a field of seven sophomores in Santa Anita’s $75,000 San Pedro Stakes at six furlongs on Sunday.  (Originally scheduled for this past Friday, March 11, the San Pedro was cancelled due to heavy rain and re-drawn this morning).

TOEWS ON ICE:  Trained by Bob Baffert and named for Chicago Blackhawks star center and captain, Jonathan Toews (pronounced TAVES), Toews On Ice was an impressive winner of the Grade III, seven furlong Bob Hope Stakes three starts back on Nov. 14 at Del Mar, but he comes off a disappointing sixth place finish as the 3-5 favorite in the one mile Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn Park Jan. 18.

Owned by Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman, Toews On Ice, who is Triple Crown nominated, was a close second to his highly regarded stablemate Mor Spirit two starts back in the Grade I Los Alamitos Futurity on Dec. 19.  A Kentucky-bred colt by Archarcharch, Toews On Ice has pressed or been on the early lead in all seven of his starts, resulting in three wins and earnings of $245,700.

DENMAN’S CALL:  Trained by Doug O’Neill, this Kentucky-bred gelding by Northern Afleet has done little wrong in two starts.  A stylish 3 ¾ length first-out maiden special weight winner going 5 ½ furlongs here on Jan. 9, Denman’s Call hugged the rail en route to an impressive third place finish behind top Derby contender Nyquist in the Grade II, seven furlong San Vicente Stakes on Feb. 15—an effort that earned him a lofty 94 Beyer Speed figure.  Owned by Gilman Racing, Westside Rentals.com or W.C. Racing, Inc., Denman’s Call is also Triple Crown nominated and could use a win in the San Pedro as a springboard to the Derby trail.

IdaBet Players Note: AWESOME LUCK WINS $58,000 SANTA ANITA ALLOWANCE BY 1 ¼ LENGTHS

A top of the mornin’ IdaBet.com players!  With the luck of the Irish wafting in the air on St. Patrick’s Day at Santa Anita, Harris Farms’ home-bred Awesome Luck made every pole a winning one in taking Thursday’s $58,000, one mile allowance feature by 1 ¼ lengths under Santiago Gonzalez.  Conditioned by Blake Heap, the 5-year-old Ghostzapper mare seemed to appreciate a surface switch from turf to dirt as she negotiated the distance in 1:37.97.

“She doesn’t seem to handle the grass,” said Heap in reference to a 13 ½ length defeat going one mile on turf here Feb. 21.  “She’s a steady-paced type of filly and today, she showed what she can do.  I told John (owner, Harris) she was doing good coming into this.”

Off at 14-1 in race five, the middle leg in Santa Anita’s Pick Six, which, thanks to a two-day carryover, generated a total pool today of more than $2.6 million, Awesome Luck was the second biggest price in a field of seven California-bred or sired mares and paid $30.20, $11.00 and $7.00.

With the winner’s share of $34,800, she increased her earnings to $96,875.  Awesome Luck now has two wins from 12 career starts.

“It’s St. Patrick’s Day and we have the green and white colors, so I guess that didn’t hurt,” said Harris.  “I don’t know if the jock’s Irish, but I guess today, everybody is!”

The heavy favorite at 3-2, Take It Easyplease sat second the entire trip, but couldn’t keep up with the winner around the far turn and finished second, 1 ¾ lengths in front of Stole a Kiss.  Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, Take It Easyplease paid $3.40 and $2.80.

Ridden by Kent Desormeaux, Stole a Kiss was off at 6-1 and paid $3.80 to show.

With a two-day Pick Six carryover of $548,670 from Sunday, $2,115,962 in “new money” was wagered on Thursday, creating a total Pick Six pool of $2,664,632.  Thursday’s Pick Six will conclude with the eighth race, which is scheduled...

RACE ONE EARLY DOUBLE- 1-4, 1-7, 4-4, 4-7 PICK-5 – 1,4 w 4,7 w 1,5 w 6,7,8 w 2 1-P L INTOWIN…an “o-fer” thus far-OH for 31—but is in a very amiable situation with the rail. Been giving hints right along. 4-NOUDIDNT BLUE CHIP…probably on the engine when gate leaves to try & control the festivities. The main danger here. 8-ZERO RATE…showed a tad of gate speed in last and then kind of an “even-steven” effort rest of the way in very fast mile.

RACE TWO 4-MACHIN MARLEY…gets some class relief here and drew much better, as well. Back down to spot where she won Feb. 17. 7-CHEAP N EASY…was used early in last trying to get in the fray from 9 post but sat after. Dips in class to an amiable spot. 2-ASSET MANAGEMENT…post destroyed chances in last. Several races prior were all solid. Another that class dip benefits.

RACE THREE 5-A LIST…has coveted post to show his electric gate speed. Had a difficult journey in last but made two moves & held well. 1-FOUR STARZ KYLE…Been hot property lately and just won in “6” class, soooo, the...
