Keeneland Quotes for the $500,000 Central Bank Ashland (G1)

We knew our IdaBet.com players would want to hear from Keeneland racing experts:

Quotes for the $500,000 Central Bank Ashland (G1)

Rusty Arnold (winning trainer of Weep No More)

“I thought she’d be that far back, and I told her (my wife, Sarah) about the half-mile pole, ‘I think she can get up for third from here.’ She just kept going, and they backed up a little bit. It was nice for the (owner) Bromagens, and we’ve been pointing for this race for two months.”

On her keys to big improvement
“Two turns, and she just came around. Each race she’s been better and better. Did we expect this? Not quite, but she’s a step ahead of us.

“We’ve got the mile and eighth in the (Kentucky) Oaks (G1) coming up. Jack Bohannan did all the work with her. She was under quarantine at Payson, and he trained her two months. Great job.”

Corey Lanerie (winning rider)

“At the top of the lane, to be honest, I didn’t think I would get up. I was rolling, I had a lot of horse, but with the short stretch, I was hoping to be third. Then about 70 yards from the wire, I was like, ‘C’mon baby – we can get it.’ She kept running and ran a huge race. Thanks to Rusty and them for the opportunity. What a great training job. He gave me all the confidence in the world, just to ride her, let her run her race and see what happens.”

Florent Geroux (rider of runner-up Rachel’s Valentina)

“I had a great trip. Cathryn Sophia came to me a little bit earlier than what I wanted her to, but it’s part of the game; it’s a race. (Weep No More) came from nowhere and just nailed us right at the end.”

Javier Castellano (rider of third-place finisher and beaten favorite Cathryn Sophia)

“It was a perfect trip; it was what I was looking for today. You have to be prepared (to duel with a...

Keeneland Quotes for the $250,000 Commonwealth (G3

We wanted our IdaBet.com players to know:

Quotes for the $250,000 Commonwealth (G3)

Martin Garcia (winning rider of Ami’s Flatter)

“The instructions that I got from (assistant trainer Ruth Schmidt) was just maintain him (in the) clear and make one run. That’s exactly how the race came out. I put my horse where he’s supposed to be and when I asked him, (it) was easy.”

Ruth Schmidt (assistant to winning trainer Josie Carroll)

“He got an amazing trip and a wonderful ride. Everything went right. He was feeling unbelievable – happy as he can be coming into this race. He brought his all.  I know (owner) Ivan (Dalos) is very, very thrilled. Josie, unfortunately, couldn’t be here, but we are extremely happy.”

Javier Castellano (rider of runner-up Ready for Rye)

“The way it looked to me, a couple of horses got the speed in the race. I set him down behind those horses. I liked the way he did it. I think the winner (Ami’s Flatter) was much the best today. (We’re) second-best today.”

Florent Geroux (rider of third-place finisher Holy Boss)

“It worked out great, (my horse) made an easy lead. It was a good race back. He hadn’t run since the Breeders’ Cup last year so we got the rust out of him and hopefully next time he should be very tough.”

Luis Saez (rider of fourth-place finisher Barbados)

“I had a very nice trip. He broke right there and when we came to the three-eighths (pole), he responded when I asked. He never gave up, he never stopped. He kept trying. But the winner made a big move and kept going.”

JERRE TO CARRIE CAPS BOWEN HAT TRICK,

PREVAILS IN OPENING DAY FEATURE RACE
AUBURN, Wash. (April 9, 2016) – Before a large sun-kissed crowd, Emerald Downs launched its 21st season of live Thoroughbred action with a nine-race card Saturday afternoon.
Leslie Mawing and Rocco Bowen were the riding stars; each recording three wins including Bowen’s resilient victory aboard Jerre to Carrie in the featured $20,500 Muckleshoot Casino Purse for 3-year-old fillies.
Owned by Ron Crockett Inc., Jerre to Carrie ran six furlongs in 1:08.70 on a fast track, edging B C Z Middleton by a head, and paid $7.80, $4 and $2.60. Tom Wenzel is the winning trainer.
B C Z Middleton overtook Jerre to Carrie into the stretch, but Jerre to Carrie fought back from the inside and prevailed after a stretch long battle.
Ridden by Jose Zunino, B C Z Middleton paid $5.40 and $3.40.
My Heart Goes On, the 6-5 betting favorite with Javier Matias riding, ran evenly to finish third and paid $2.40 to show. Last year’s state champion 2-year-old filly, My Heart Goes On appeared a tad washy in the warm-up and lacked her customary punch.
Grindstone Shine, Kiss My Lulu and Sugarseeker completed the order of finish.
Rocketing to the lead from the outside post, Jerre to Carrie led through fractions of :21.92 and :44.24 before yielding command to B C Z Middleton, but showed her mettle to rally back for the victory.
“Today was a huge win, and showed that she’s going in the right direction,” Bowen said. “These were good fillies she beat today.”
A Kentucky-bred by Congrats-Kids Kooler, Jerre to Carrie is 2-1-1 in six career starts with earnings of $33,100 including $11,275 for...

David Fawkes (winning trainer of Sheer Drama)

“I talked to (Keeneland Racing Secretary) Ben (Huffman) about this race early in the year, and thought it might be a good starting spot. Never expected it to come up this tough. But she ran her race – she brought her A game. She worked so good last week, I thought she could do anything (in this race).”

Click here for Keeneland racing analyst Tom Leach’s post-race interview with trainer David Fawkes.

Joe Bravo (winning rider, who scored his second consecutive victory following the Shakertown-G2)

“This filly did a lot of great things last year, won some Grade 1s, and this was her first race back. (Trainer) Dave (Fawkes) and I spent all week looking at it and saying, ‘Wow. These are some of the best fillies in the country.’ What she did today – you gotta just love her. She has so much heart. (Trainer Todd) Pletcher’s horse (Stopchargingmaria) came to us at the top of the lane, and she passed us. (When a horse trained by) Todd goes by you, you think, ‘Oh right.’ But Sheer Drama said, ‘None of that.’ She gutted it out and outran her down the lane.”

Javier Castellano (rider of runner-up Stopchargingmaria)

“The outside post didn’t help her much, and I had to go wide a little bit. That might have cost me the race but it’s something you just gotta deal with. You have to...

Brody’s Cause Wins $1 Million Toyota Blue Grass

Trained by Dale Romans and ridden by Luis Saez, Brody’s Cause covered the 1 1/8 miles on a fast main track in 1:50.20. The victory was worth $600,000 and increased Brody’s Cause’s earnings to $1,123,138 with a record of 6-3-0-1.

A Keeneland sales graduate, Brody’s Cause is a Kentucky-bred son of Giant’s Causeway out of the Sahm mare Sweet Breanna. (Click here for a video of Brody’s Cause selling at the 2014 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.)

Brody’s Cause became the fourth horse to complete a Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity (G1)-Toyota Blue Grass double. The others were Round Table (1956-1957), Dullahan (2011-2012) and Carpe Diem (2014-2015). Dullahan was trained by Romans.

The victory was the first in the race for Saez and his third winner of the afternoon.

Laoban led the field of 14 through fractions of :23.44, :46.75 and 1:11.44 as Brody’s Cause raced near the back of the pack.

Entering the far turn, Laoban was coming under pressure from Star Hill and Cards of Stone while Saez began picking off horses. Entering the stretch, Saez swung Brody’s Cause wide, collared the leaders at midstretch and drew clear as My Man Sam and Cherry Wine rallied from far back to claim the second and third...
