LONGSHOT IRON ROB PROVES BEST IN $75,000 BAFFLE STAKES;

RIDDEN BY GONZALEZ & TRAINED BY PAPAPRODROMOU,

HE GETS 6 ½ FURLONGS ON THE MAIN TRACK IN 1:15.50

Iron Rob

Supplemented at a cost of $1,500, longshot Iron Rob validated the investment with a half length win in Sunday’s $75,000 Baffle Stakes at 6 ½ furlongs.  Originally scheduled for the hillside turf at the same distance, the Baffle was switched to the main track due to rainfall earlier this week.  Ridden by Santiago Gonzalez and trained by George Papaprodromou, the       3-year-old Florida-bred colt by Twirling Candy got the distance in 1:15.50.

Breaking from post position two in a field that was reduced to four sophomores by a pair of late scratches, Iron Rob sat a restrained second to favored Tiz a Billy around the far turn, took over a furlong out and won while eased up a bit at the wire.

With no show wagering, Iron Rob, who was pulled up after the race on the Club House turn and did not return to the Winner’s Circle, was off at 5-1 and paid  $13.60 and $3.80.

HAMBURG, N.Y. — Western Alumni had a bit of a tussle to get to the front end in Buffalo Raceway’s $10,000 Open Pace on Saturday night (Feb. 20) but that battle ended up winning the war.
Facing a stubborn Listowel to the opening quarter, Western Alumni (Jim McNeight) managed to set the fractions and hung on late to register a neck victory over Youwillwishyouhad (Bruce Aldrich Jr.) in 1:56.0 over the fast track.
It was the featured event on the 13-race card that completed a three-day race week where the handle was over $900,000.
Buffalo Raceway Chief Operating Officer Jim Mango said, “It is nice to see the numbers like that for our operation in Hamburg. It was a week of hard work for the track crew with the rising temperatures playing havoc. The race secretary (Tom Agosti) has put together full competitive fields and it is starting to make a difference resulting in exciting racing in Western New York. The measure of it is more wagering. I think it will continue throughout the meet.”
Back to the Open, Western Alumni ($9.30) posted fractions of 28.0, 57.4 and 1:26.3. The 8-year-old gelding then had to rebuff the late charges of Youwillwishyouhad and China Dream (JackFlanigen) who both missed by a neck and head respectively.
It was the second straight win for Western Alumni (Western Hanover-Countryview Miss), now a winner of $12,060...

VELOCITY VESPA, JUST A BEE SECOND LEG WINNERS OF ISLE LATE CLOSER

Pompano Beach, FL…February 20, 2016…The $150,000 Isle Casino Racing Pompano Park Late Closing Series continued at the South Florida oval with Velocity Vespa and Just A Bee earning the top award in  their respective divisions in the second leg of the series.

Velocity Vespa, handled with perfection by George Napolitano, Jr., led every stride of her mile while recording fractions of :26.4, :54.4 and 1;22.3 in route to a lifetime best performance of 1:50.2.

The six year-old daughter of I Scoot Hanover pinned the 2 ¼ length defeat on Show Runner, handled by Tim Maier with Pertty Music and Ed Hensley teaming up for show honors.

Lucy’s Pearl finished fourth with the favorite, Totally Rusty, fifth in the septet.

Positions were relatively stagnant once the dust settled, sans a mild backside move by Lucy’s Pearl to wend her way into third—briefly—with the winner never relenting any ground at any stage of the mile.

In a post-race interview, driver Napolitano related, “last week I tried to rate her a little more but, the more I think about it, sometimes these mares just don’t want to be rated and this one just kind of spoke to me

Thievery pulled a minor upset in the $75,000 Two Altazano Stakes and Bravura was much the best in the$75,000 Jim’s Orbit Stakes.

Last month Victoria Ashford’s homebred Bravura was a convincing winner in the   $50,000 Groovy Stakes. He was heavily favored for tonight’s $75,000 Jim’s Orbit and did not disappoint.  Jockey C. J. McMahon, guided the chestnut colt from his far outside post to the lead and won the six-furlong stakes in 1:10.59, one of the quickest times of the 2016 Sam Houston Race Park meet.

“We expected a great race and he delivered,” said Calhoun. “I was glad to see him get away so quickly. This colt’s very sharp and. C. J. fits him very well.”

“He walked into the gate and stood perfectly,” said McMahon. “He left there on his “A” game. When the other horse ran to us, I squeezed and he ran on. He never ceases to amaze me.”

Ashford was extremely proud of her Early Flyer colt.

“I’ve bred horses for 25 years and this was my first Texas Stallion Stakes,” said Ashford. “It means...

Paulina’s Love

Paulina's Love

Consistent Paulina’s Love registered her first stakes win in Saturday’s Grade II, $200,000 Buena Vista Stakes at Santa Anita as she held off the late charge of  Stormy Lucy to prevail by a neck under Gary Stevens while covering a flat mile on turf in 1:36.06.

A comfortable second to longshot Moanin going to the far turn, Paulina’s Love, with Theatre Star to her outside, took command five sixteenths from home and was all-out to hold off the late charge of Stormy Lucy, a Grade I winner.

Trained by Richard Baltas, Paulina’s Love, a Louisiana-bred daughter of Mizzen Mast, was the third choice in a field of 11 older fillies and mares at 7-2 and paid $9.60, $4.80 and $3.80.

“I’ve fallen in love with her,” said Stevens, who is now three for five with “Pauline” in the afternoon.  “These (owners) have been so patient with her and have allowed Richard to do what he wants with her.  She just keeps developing and getting better and better.  She exploded at the eighth pole just like the last time…

“I rode her with a lot of confidence, like she was the favorite.  She minds, she lets me do what I want, whatever the pace scenario is.  When she’s done, I’d like to take her home and put her in my...
