Turfway Park Bret Battaglia Picks Feb 21st

Race 1

QUEEN OF SPRING has been off since New Year’s Day when she won on the move back down to this bottom level, give her a slight edge against a wide-open field. MISS OMEARA is inconsistent, but won against tougher two starts back and looks dangerous here on the drop in class. DUCHESS WHITNEY has won two in a row coming into this one and would be no surprise here.

Race 2

AS YOU KNOW drops in class after a dull effort last time out and looks like he’s in a good spot to pick up the win today. GOOD NIGHT BID comes in off a maiden win here at Turfway and is a contender. DEVADUTT also comes in off a maiden win over the track and has a chance.

Race 3

CALHOUN has been running well since moving to Turfway with two wins and a second from his last three starts. He has the speed to be in contention throughout, give him the edge against a well-matched field. FAVORITE COACH shows two solid efforts in his last two starts over the track and looks like the one to beat. TOSTON just missed last time out and definitely looks capable of running well again today.

Race 4

DO I DO ran third back in December in his only start since September. He has two wins over the track in the past and is the choice for the win here. GRAND COULEE shows two solid efforts at this same level in his last two starts. NIMBLE TIGER has been third in each of his last two starts and has to be considered.

Race 5

PRINCESS PRINCESS come if off a nice second place finish on the grass at Tampa and looked very sharp breaking her maiden at long odds at Keeneland before...

Stakes winning Path of David and talented upstarts Tiz a Billy, True Brilliance, Hot Ore, He’s a Tiger and Iron Rob all loom prominently as a half dozen 3-year-olds go    6 ½ furlongs down Santa Anita’s hillside turf course in Sunday’s $75,000 Baffle Stakes.

Trained by Kristin Mulhall, Path of David rallied from off the pace to win the one mile turf Eddie Logan Stakes here on Dec. 31 and was subsequently well beaten by top Derby hopeful Mor Spirit in the Grade III, 1 1/16 miles Robert B. Lewis Stakes on Feb. 6.

The return to turf and massive drop in class should benefit Path of David, a Kentucky-bred gelding by the Gone West stallion, Istan.  Owned by Ike and Dawn Thrash and Janet Alley, Path of David broke his maiden three starts back going one mile on turf at Del Mar Nov. 28, and will hope to be flying the final eighth of a mile in his first try down Santa Anita’s unique hillside layout.  With both of his lifetime wins coming on turf, he’s made seven overall starts and has earnings of $90,900.

Tiz a Billy, who is trained by Brian Koriner, comes off a scintillating 6 ½ length maiden special weight win over the course at 1-2, and need only run back to that race to have a huge chance in the Baffle.  Blessed with an abundance of speed, Tiz a Billy rated well in third position after a half mile and finished up like a horse with a future in his maiden tally.

Owned by James Cahill, Neil Haymes and Janet Lyons, the Kentucky-bred colt by Tizway was...

Thanks for playing on IdaBet.com and enjoy your weekend everyone!

JOCKEY QUOTES

GARY STEVENS, PAULINA’S LOVE, WINNER: “I’ve fallen in love with her. These guys have been so patient with her and have allowed Richard to do what he wants with her. She just keeps developing and getting better and better. She exploded at the eighth pole just like the last time and when I saw 12-1 on the morning line with an 88 Beyer number last time . . . that wasn’t right; she exploded that day.

“I rode her with a lot of confidence, like she was the favorite. She minds, she lets me do what I want, whatever the pace scenario is. When she’s done, I’d like to take her home and put her in my backyard.”

KENT DESORMEAUX, STORMY LUCY, SECOND: “There wasn’t a straw in her path. She gave me a dream ride. She absolutely flew to the wire. The winner was a nose better today, that’s all. They were too good today.”

ALEX SOLIS, KERI BELLE, THIRD: “I had a perfect trip . . . She ran hard, she just didn’t get there.”

TRAINER QUOTES

DAVID MEAH, ASSISTANT TO RICHARD BALTAS, PAULINA’S LOVE, WINNER: “She’s special at this distance and even better when she gets a little time between races like we did here. Seven, eight weeks is a huge thing for her. Four or five weeks, she doesn’t fire like this, but seven, eight weeks and she can fire.

“She had a perfect trip. I didn’t expect Flavien (Prat on Moanin) to go out like that (on the lead), but it’s OK. We came home in front and that’s all that matters at...

IdaBet Players Note: LEGENDARY ZENYATTA’S SECOND FOAL, ZICONIC, RALLIES

Good afternoon IdaBet.com players, we thought you would want to know how Zenyatta’s offspring are faring and thanks for choosing IdaBet.com!

ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 20, 2016)—Whenever the legendary mare Zenyatta’s name is mentioned, expectations run high.  And so was the case leading into Saturday’s third race at Santa Anita, a $56,000 maiden special weight for 3-year-olds at seven furlongs, as Zenyatta’s second foal, a Jerry and Ann Moss homebred colt by top sire Tapit, named Ziconic, made his career debut.

Breaking from post position five in a field of seven, the John Shirreffs-conditioned Ziconic, with Gary Stevens aboard, was devoid of any early speed and was more than 15 ½ lengths off the lead after a half mile.  Coming to the quarter pole though, Ziconic was in high gear and although he was next to last turning for home, he rallied in a manner reminiscent of his mother to finish third, beaten 1 ¾ lengths.

“We knew he was going to break slow and it took him a little while to get wound up,” said Stevens.  “I was at the three eighths pole and was so far back I said ‘Buddy, your momma could win from here, do it!’

“I told John that I never got to ride the big mare Zenyatta, but I know what she felt like now.  They’re going to have a lot of fun with him.  The best part is that he enjoys his job.  He loved what he was doing today, especially that last eighth of a mile.”

As for Shirreffs, who trained Zenyatta through 19 victories from 20 starts, including the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic in 2009, he was understandably pleased with Ziconic’s first performance.

“He warmed up well and he did as good as he could do today,” he said.  “You always have expectations.  You dream.  With Zenyatta, we realized those dreams.”

Given Zenyatta’s come from behind style of running, Shirreffs was asked if he felt a small sense of déjà vu as Ziconic’s debut...
