2018 Dubai Racing Carnival – Thursday 1st February

Meydan Selections – Week 4:

The Dubai World Cup Carnival has been sensational so far. I would venture to say the best ever and it is only going to get better and better as we move towards World Cup night on March 31.  The Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park on Saturday produced a tremendous performance from Gun Runner, but bar a massive U-turn from connections he will not be in Dubai for the World Cup, having retired to stallion duties. Two others could be though. Sharp Azteca will surely drop in trip and contest the Godolphin Mile, while West Coast, who was third behind Gun Runner in the Breeders’ Cup Classic and second in Florida, could also make the trip and is the 3-1 favourite with British bookmakers. Exciting times ahead.

For now though it is Week Four of the Carnival and I have five selections for you.

10:05am (ET) Meydan – Benbatl

This Godolphin representative was a successful tip for us when he won the Singspiel Stakes on the opening night of the Carnival three weeks ago and I take him to win again. The Singspiel brought out the best in him in that he was able to compete on decent ground over 10 furlongs, which is the ideal scenario for him. He gets the same conditions again and as such will be tough to beat. The Group One Dubai Turf is his ultimate target and this is a stepping-stone in lesser company that he should take in his stride. He is a class act.

10:40am (ET) Meydan – Jordan Sport

This sprinter ran really well last week when just touched off by Dutch Masterpiece over 5f and he can go one better over this 6f, a distance that suits...

BLINK OF AN EYE HANDICAP HEADS FRIDAY’S CARD AT LOS ALAMITOS – NO LIVE RACING FEBRUARY 3-4

Grade 1 caliber stakes runners Renewed and Maggie Durant will take on recent 100-yard winners Im Leonidas and Snowy Coronitas in a wide open running of the Blink Of An Eye Stakes on Friday at Los Alamitos. The Blink Of An Eye will be contested at 100 yards, which gives on-track an opportunity to get and up close view of the great sounds and sights of the loading into the starting gate of a Quarter Horse race. The card also features a Pick 6 Carryover of $3,586. First post is 7 p.m. with the Pick 6 starting in race three.

Fans are reminded that Los Alamitos will not have live racing on Saturday and Sunday night. Los Alamitos will be open for simulcasting of Australian racing and Cal Expo harness on Saturday. The track will be dark on Super Bowl Sunday night. Live night racing will resume on Friday, February 9.  Los Alamitos, which conducts year-round racing, will close the track for renovation after morning works on February 3rd  and will reopen the track on Thursday morning, February 8.

Owned by Kolleen Ledgerwood and trained by Roberto Dominguez, Renewed enjoyed a solid sophomore campaign in 2017. The Walk Thru Fire horse qualified to three major derbies in the process and was second in the Grade 3 PCQHRA Breeders Derby. He also qualified to the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Super Derby, Grade 2 Southern California Derby, Restricted Grade 3 Governor’s Cup Derby. Spackman Racing and Lin Melton’s Maggie Durant won the California Breeders Matron Stakes at 400 yards and most recently beat the males in a 100 yards dash. This is a strong overall field with six of the eight sprinters having won multiple races last year.
