IdaBet Players Note: MISS DOUBLE D’ORO FLIES LATE TO TAKE $75,000 ARBORETUM II STAKES

With a devastating late kick the final furlong, longshot Miss Double d’Oro flew from last to first to win Friday’s $75,000 Arboretum II Stakes by one half length at Santa Anita.  Ridden by Santiago Gonzalez and conditioned by Neil Drysdale, Miss Double d’Oro prevailed in a field of nine older fillies and mares as she covered 6 ½ furlongs down the hillside turf course in 1:13.98.

Off at 10-1, she paid $23.00, $6.00 and $3.80.

“We realize now that she’s got that one short kick,” said Drysdale.  “So you need to sit tight and make a run.”

A 4-year-old Kentucky-bred filly by Medaglia d’Oro, Miss Double d’Oro is owned by Calumet Farm.  In getting her third win from 10 starts, she picked up $47,700 for the win, increasing her earnings to $155,950.

Off as the solid 3-5 favorite, Dreamologist sat a close second down the hill and was carried wide at the dirt crossing by pacesetter, Tesalina.  Ridden by Flavien Prat, Dreamologist overhauled Tesalina with about 50 yards to run, but couldn’t hold off the winner late and paid $2.80 and $2.20.

Ridden by Kent Desormeaux, Tesalina was very erratic crossing the dirt but kept to her task gamely, finishing a nose in front of My Year Is a Day for third money.  Off at 4-1, she paid $3.20 to show.

Fractions on the race were 22.07, 45.07 and 1:07.96.

First post time for an 11-race card on Saturday is 12:30 p.m.  Admission gates open at 10:30 a.m.

IdaBet Players Note: FANTASTIC STYLE LOOMS LARGE IN SUNDAY’S GRADE III, $100,000 LAS FLORES STAKES

Idle since July 11, Bob Baffert’s Fantastic Style heads a field of six older fillies and mares going six furlongs in Sunday’s Grade III, $100,000 Las Flores Stakes at Santa Anita.  A winner of the Grade II, 6 ½ furlong Great Lady M Stakes at Los Alamitos July 11, Fantastic Style was an impressive maiden special weight winner going six furlongs I her second career start here in January, 2015, and has three wins from four Santa Anita starts.

FANTASTIC STYLE:  Owned by Kaleem Shah, Inc., this 4-year-old filly by Harlan’s Holiday has an abbreviated but very impressive resume, as she is 6-4-1-1 and is unbeaten in her only try at six furlongs.  Handicappers will no doubt take comfort in knowing that Rafael Bejarano, who was aboard for her last two wins, is back in the saddle for the Las Flores, apparently opting for her over highly regarded Cadet Roni, with whom he won a pair of races here in January.  Naturally quick, Fantastic Style could have plenty of company up front if she guns for the early lead.

CADET RONI:  Trained by Mark Glatt, this 4-year-old daughter of Colonel John comes off a smashing 6 ¾ length win over a wet fast main track in the restricted Wishing Well Stakes here on Jan. 31, and like Fantastic Style, seeks her third win in a row.  Owned by Al and Saundra Kirkwood, she’ll be ridden for the first time by Gary Stevens.  With three wins from seven starts at Santa Anita, Cadet Roni, who will face graded stakes competition for the first time, is 11-4-1-2 overall.

FINEST CITY:  Trained by Ian Kruljac, this 4-year-old City Zip filly was an ultra game second, beaten a head, two starts back in the Grade II, seven furlong Santa Monica Stakes on Jan. 23, and was subsequently third in a tough second condition allowance at 6 ½ furlongs Feb. 11.  Owned by Seltzer Thoroughbreds, both of her lifetime wins have come at six furlongs. ...

MEADOWLANDS AND ITS HORSEMEN TO RAISE MONEY FOR FLORIDA FIRE VICTIMS

Such a great thing the Meadowlands and its horsemen are doing.  They are teaming up to raise money for the victims of a horrific barn fire in Florida earlier this week. 12 race horses were killed in a fire at the South Florida Trotting Center late Tuesday night. 11 other horses were rescued, but suffered various injuries including two who were listed in critical condition. The fire broke out in a barn shared by trainers Roman Lopez and Thomas Haughton.

“This is everyone’s worst nightmare that is involved with horses and we at the Meadowlands knew immediately it was our responsibility to do anything we can to help these horsemen who suffered the loss of their horses,” said Meadowlands GM/CEO Jason M. Settlemoir.

Drivers and trainers competing this weekend at the Meadowlands are invited to fill out a form available in the paddock to pledge a percentage of their earnings to those affected by the fire. The money will be deducted by the horsemen’s bookkeeper and sent directly to the Florida Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association.

Any interested IdaBet.com players or other owners or horsemen interested in donating are asked to contact Jennifer Bongiorno at the Meadowlands via email at jbongiorno@playmeadowlands.com or by calling (201) 460-4166.

Earlier this winter, the Meadowlands and its horsemen raised more than $30,000 for the victims of another barn fire in Ontario that killed 43 horses.

Trotters, distaffers headline Friday at Big M

You heard it first here on the IdaBet.com Player News Blog!  A 12-race card featuring trotters and distaff pacers awaits punters on Friday (March 18) at The Meadowlands, with nearly a quarter million dollars in carryovers and guaranteed pools on the line as well.
Co-featured third-level events share the spotlight on the track, with a full field of ten trotters competing in the evening’s seventh event and a septet of distaff pacers squaring off in the night’s 11th race.  The $12,500 seventh features Julie Miller trainee Magenta Man, who seeks his seventh win in nine starts on the year.  Just last week, the 4-year-old Muscles Yankee gelding kept on for a 1:53.4 triumph over World Cup after making two early moves to protect the lead.  Usual driver Andy Miller will team up with Magenta Man from post 4.  To Magenta Man’s immediate outside will be World Cup, who swung four-wide off the far turn and just missed Magenta Man by half a length last week.  Joe Bongiorno once again will drive the Richard Johnson-trained 7-year-old.
A pair of solid invaders are in the offing, with Can Do (Anthony Napolitano) returning from Saratoga after enjoying some success in the Open ranks earlier this meet, and Workout Wonder (Andy McCarthy) commencing his 4-year-old season following mild success on the New York Sire Stakes circuit last year.
The evening’s featured $12,00 distaff features the invading Mandy’s Mattjesty, who swept a late closing series at The Meadows in February.  Ron Burke entered the 6-year-old His Mattjesty mare for the optional $20,000 claiming price, and Joe Bongiorno will drive her from post 1 in the field of seven.  Among her top rivals are Tom Fanning trainee Do Your Job (Marcus Miller), who emerged through traffic to save second in her seasonal debut last week, and Mischief Maker N (Steven Nason), who makes her first Stateside start for new trainer Kelvin...
